US: The United States has already lost the artificial intelligence battle to China which is heading towards global dominance because of its advances in emerging cyber capabilities, the Pentagon’s former software chief told the Financial Times.
China, the world’s second largest economy, is likely to dominate many of the key emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and genetics within a decade or so, according to Western intelligence assessments.
Nicolas Chaillan, the Pentagon’s first chief software officer who resigned in protest against the slow pace of technological transformation in the U.S. military, said the failure to respond was putting the United States at risk.
Eurozone: Britain is working out how to support energy-intensive industries hit by soaring gas prices, business minister Kwasi Kwarteng said on Sunday, describing the situation as critical but declining to say what action is being considered.
Producers of steel, glass, ceramics and paper and other sectors have said they may be forced to halt production unless the government does something about energy prices.
“It’s a critical situation clearly,” Kwarteng told the BBC, when asked about possible factory closures.
In a separate interview with Sky News he said: “We’ve got very, very high gas prices, very high electricity prices, we already have support in place for industries, and we’re looking at ways that we can help industry.”
Kwarteng also said he was working with finance minister Rishi Sunak on the matter.
However, a Treasury source denied there were any such talks, fuelling criticism from the opposition Labour Party about the government response.
