Economic news:

US: The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday shortened the usual extension of two general licenses for Russian commercial vehicle manufacturer GAZ Group, a Treasury official told Reuters, as the United States seeks to deter Russia from invading Ukraine.

The official said the licenses, previously extended for a year at a time and set to expire on Wednesday, were being extended for only 90 days.

“These authorizations were extended for a shorter time period given the current situation with Russia; further extension will be informed by Russia’s behavior,” the official said.

Russia has massed tens of thousands of troops near Ukraine’s borders. It denies planning an invasion but NATO said it was putting forces on standby and reinforcing eastern Europe — moves that Moscow described as “hysteria”.

The United States has warned that Russia will face massive consequences if it invades Ukraine.

The licenses authorize certain activities involving the van maker and transactions necessary to divest or transfer debt, equity or other holdings in GAZ.

Eurozone: The euro zone economic recovery weakened this month, despite an upturn in Germany where factories benefited from an easing in supply chain bottlenecks, as renewed restrictions put a dent in the bloc’s dominant services industry, a survey showed.

With the Omicron coronavirus variant sweeping across Europe governments have been encouraging citizens to stay home and avoid socialising while soaring prices have discouraged consumers from spending.

IHS Markit’s Flash Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index, seen as good gauge of overall economic health, dropped to 52.4 in January from 53.3 in December, its lowest since February and below the 52.6 predicted in a Reuters poll.

That headline number was affected by the services PMI, which dropped to a nine-month low, although it remained in growth territory.

With customers staying home, growth in demand for services almost dried up. The new business index sank to its lowest reading since April last year just before parts of the economy reopened after a stricter lockdown.

Important Data: US CB Consumer Confidence (Jan) today at 10:00 this time estimated 111.8, previously which was 115.8. US API Weekly Crude Oil Stock today at 16:30 previously which was 1.404M. JAPAN Corporate Services Price Index (CSPI) (YoY) today at 18:50 this time estimated 1.0%, previously which was 1.1%. NEW ZEALAND Trade Balance (MoM) (Dec) today at 16:45 this time estimated -700M, previously which was -864M.
