Market Overview

Hot inflation data dominated last week. US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September against 3.6% expected (Reuters, Wednesday 14 October), and producer prices followed on Thursday with 6.3% against 5.3% expected. The dollar reached an 18-month high, and Bitcoin briefly traded below 80,000 before recovering to close at 81,395, down 2.73% on the week.

The week ahead is light on top-tier data. The Federal Reserve’s blackout began on Saturday ahead of the 27–28 October meeting, so no policy speakers are scheduled. Initial jobless claims on Thursday 22 October at 12:30 GMT carry the most weight, followed on Friday by flash PMIs at 13:45 GMT and University of Michigan inflation expectations at 14:00 GMT. Earnings from Netflix on Tuesday, and Tesla and Meta on Wednesday, will steer equity sentiment.

The desk reads Bitcoin as the strongest chart, with buyers defending last week’s low. Ether and Cardano look weakest, as both were rejected at longer averages and face fund outflows or persistent selling. Counter-trend rallies in the weaker coins offer the better reward for risk.

Key highlights

  • Liquidations: About $974 million of positions were liquidated in October, alongside nearly $1 billion of exchange-traded fund withdrawals (CoinGape).
  • Sentiment: CoinMarketCap’s Fear and Greed Index read 49 on 17 October, neutral, down from 50 the previous day.
  • XRP funds: US-listed XRP funds recorded a $2.47 million outflow on 16 October; total assets stand at $1.47 billion (SoSoValue).
  • Cardano selling: Taker selling exceeded buying for seven straight days from 11 October, driving a 12.8% decline from 0.256 to 0.223 (CoinGlass).
  • Energy: US petrol averaged a record $4.33 a gallon in September, according to AAA, nearly $0.50 above the 2023 record.
  • Beige Book: The Fed’s survey described modest growth, little net change in employment and intensifying input costs in three Districts.

Key Market Drivers

Inflation Data Has Put a Fed Hike Back on the Table

Core consumer prices rose 0.3% for a second month to 2.6% on the year, while core producer prices jumped 0.7% on the month against 0.3% expected. The Fed raised rates in September for the first time in more than three years, and markets now see roughly even odds between a hold and a hike on 28 October (Reuters). Chair Warsh declined to prejudge the decision, Hammack warned of a firmer response if inflation expectations worsen, and UBS projects a third hike in March 2027.

Key events: Fed blackout until Thursday 29 October; FOMC Tuesday 27 to Wednesday 28 October; jobless claims Thursday 22 October.

Real Incomes and Treasury Yields Tighten Conditions

Average hourly earnings rose only 0.1% in September and 3% on the year, well below consumer inflation, which squeezes real incomes. Higher Treasury yields have already lifted mortgage and auto-loan rates, and Wells Fargo Investment Institute expects further Fed hikes before spring 2027. Wednesday’s 20-year Treasury auction will test demand for long-dated debt at these yields, with the result feeding directly into risk appetite across equities and crypto.

Key events: 20-year Treasury auction Wednesday 21 October, 17:00 GMT (expected); 5-year TIPS auction Thursday 22 October.

Fund Flows Separate Bitcoin From the Altcoins

US-listed crypto funds lost $610.7 million last week, roughly half the $1.29 billion of the prior week. Bitcoin products lost about $146 million between 12 and 15 October, and Solana funds shed $25.5 million across the week. Ether products lost $320.1 million, overtaking Bitcoin as the largest drag, a redemption pattern that has coincided with sharper falls in the smaller coins.

Key events: Daily fund-flow releases each weekday; the weekly total on Friday 23 October.

Equity Earnings Will Set the Risk Tone

The Nasdaq Composite lost ground last week and the S&P 500 was heading for a weekly loss despite lower yields (Schwab). FactSet shows 84% of companies beating estimates, yet those names are falling 0.2% on average against a usual gain of 0.9%. Netflix, down about 40% this year, reports on Tuesday after announcing 1,000 job cuts, and Tesla and Meta are expected on Wednesday.

Key events: Netflix, GE Aerospace and RTX on Tuesday 20 October; Tesla and Meta on Wednesday 21 October.

A weekly close below 79,694 would hand control to sellers across the majors, while a close above 84,254 would reopen the path to the 89,713 average.

US Jobless Claims Scenario Analysis

Initial claims for the week ending 17 October are due on Thursday 22 October at 12:30 GMT. Consensus is 200,000 against 199,000 prior.

Claims fall: 195,000 or below

A tight labour market on top of hot inflation would harden hike pricing for 28 October, lifting yields and the dollar against crypto.

  • Bitcoin79,694, then 76,533
  • Ether2,299.6, then 2,132.7
  • XRP1.2820, then 1.2431
  • Dogecoin0.0777, then 0.0675
  • Cardano0.2157, then 0.1976

Claims rise: 210,000 or above

A softer labour market would ease hike pricing and give risk assets room to rebound towards the overhead averages.

  • Bitcoin84,254, then 89,713
  • Ether2,577.0, then 2,750.6
  • XRP1.4196, then 1.4919

Bitcoin Outlook: 79,694 Support Anchors the Rebound Above the Channel

81,395 -2,284 (-2.73%) week Range 79,694–84,254

Outlook: Bias is constructive while Bitcoin holds above 79,694. Last week’s decline from 84,254 stalled at that low after the hot inflation prints, and buyers defended it on Thursday. We expect another test of the 76,533 average before any renewed push higher, and prefer to work from the 79,694 zone.

Bitcoin weekly chart: price near 81,395 after breaking above a falling channel, holding over the 76,533 and 71,502 averages, with the 89,713 average above.
Bitcoin, weekly chart. Price broke out of the descending channel in August and has since ranged beneath the 89,713 average.

76,533
Support 1
79,694
Resistance 1
84,254
Resistance 2
89,713

Weekly chart structure

  • Trend: the break above the channel that began near the October 2025 high of about 126,000 has held since August.
  • Averages: 89,713 overhead, with rising averages at 76,533 and 71,502 below price.
  • Last candle: opened 83,679, reached 84,254, fell to 79,694 and closed at 81,395 with a long lower wick.
  • Momentum: RSI at 56.35 sits above its average at 51.79 but has eased from September’s higher readings.

Key technical levels

79,694 is last week’s low and separates a pullback from a failed breakout. 76,533 is the next average beneath. Above price, 84,254 is the recent high and 89,713 the longer average. A weekly close below 76,533 would put the channel breakout in doubt.

Fundamental drivers

Fund flows

Bitcoin funds took in $5.1 million on 15 October, then lost $82.39 million on 16 October, led by IBIT with $71.78 million (SoSoValue). Price held better than equities through the same sessions.

Institutional access

Standard Chartered began direct Bitcoin and Ether trading for eligible Professional Investor clients in the UAE, and MSCI adopted index eligibility rules (crypto.news, 17 October).

Rationale: Trend and structure favour buyers above the channel; hot inflation and fund outflows argue for patience, so entry waits at the 79,694 low.

Invalidation: A daily close below 76,300. The main risk is a firmer Fed hike pricing after Thursday’s claims.

Ether Outlook: Sellers Defend the 2,750.6 Average Inside the Channel

2,422.7 -111.5 (-4.40%) week Range 2,299.6–2,577.0

Outlook: Bias is bearish while Ether trades below 2,750.6. The rally stalled at 2,577.0 and sellers pushed price back to the 2,299.6 area before a modest recovery. We expect rallies towards 2,577.0 to meet supply, with the 2,355.6 average the first pivot underfoot.

Ether weekly chart: price near 2,422.7 inside a descending channel from 4,800, rejected at the 2,750.6 average, with the 2,355.6 and 2,132.7 averages beneath.

  • Averages: 2,750.6 overhead, with 2,355.6 and 2,132.7 beneath price.
  • Last candle: opened 2,534.4, high 2,577.0, low 2,299.6 and a close at 2,422.7, back above the 2,355.6 average.
  • Momentum: RSI at 53.35 sits just under its average at 53.45, a flattening profile.

Key technical levels

2,577.0 is last week’s high and the first resistance; 2,750.6 is the longer average that capped the rally. Support starts at 2,299.6, then 2,132.7. A weekly close above 2,750.6 would challenge the channel top, while a close below 2,299.6 would open the lower average.

Fundamental drivers

Fund outflows

BlackRock’s ETHA accounted for all of the $69.68 million Ether fund outflow on 16 October, the third consecutive day of withdrawals (SoSoValue).

Flows and price diverge

Ether rose 3.5% to 2,443.82 on 15 October even as funds lost $60.22 million, showing that flows and price are decoupling this week (CoinGabbar).

Rationale: Falling channel, rejection at 2,750.6 and persistent fund outflows agree; a rally to the 2,577.0 high offers the cleanest sale zone.

Invalidation: A daily close above 2,780.0. The main risk is a sharp return of fund inflows.

XRP Outlook: Break Below the Rising Wedge Puts 1.2431 in Play

1.2954 -0.1134 (-8.05%) week Range 1.2820–1.4196

Outlook: Bias is bearish while XRP stays below 1.4919. The 8% decline took price out of the rising wedge formed since the August low, and the close sits just above the 1.2431 average. We prefer to sell rallies towards 1.4196 rather than add below 1.2820.

XRP weekly chart: price at 1.2954 after slipping through a rising wedge, below the 1.4919 average and a falling trendline from 3.65, above the 1.2431 average.

  • Averages: 2.0092 far overhead, 1.4919 above price and 1.2431 beneath it.
  • Last candle: opened 1.4088, high 1.4196, low 1.2820 and a close at 1.2954, near the bottom of its range.
  • Momentum: RSI at 46.97 is below 50 and only just above its average at 45.68.

Key technical levels

1.4196 is last week’s high and the first resistance; 1.4919 marks the average and the falling-trendline zone. 1.2431 is the average that supports price, with 1.0000 the August low. A weekly close below 1.2431 turns attention to 1.0000; a close above 1.4919 neutralises the bias.

Fundamental drivers

Fund flows

The $104,510 outflow on 15 October was the smallest of the month, but the 16 October withdrawal came entirely from the Canary XRP fund (SoSoValue).

Support watch

CoinGape flagged 1.25 as the next test despite 13 consecutive weeks of fund inflows, a sign that inflows alone have not stopped the decline.

Dogecoin Outlook: The 0.0816 Average Now Caps Rebounds Below the Channel

0.07975 -0.00704 (-8.11%) week Range 0.07770–0.08814

Outlook: Bias is bearish while Dogecoin trades below 0.0816. The rising channel from the August low gave way last week, and price closed beneath the average that had supported it. We prefer a retest of 0.0816 as the sale zone, with 0.0881 the ceiling for the idea.

Dogecoin weekly chart: price at 0.07975 below a broken rising channel and the 0.08161 average, with a falling trendline from 0.30 and the 0.10187 average above.

  • Averages: 0.17248 and 0.10187 overhead, and 0.08161 now acting as resistance.
  • Last candle: opened 0.08678, high 0.08814, low 0.07770 and a close at 0.07975 after failing near 0.0881.
  • Momentum: RSI at 43.71 is below 50 and marginally above its average at 42.51.

Key technical levels

0.0816 is the broken average and the first resistance; 0.0881 is last week’s high. Support sits at 0.0675, the August low, then 0.0630. A weekly close above 0.0881 would remove the bearish structure, while a close below 0.0777 would expose the August low.

Fundamental drivers

Whale accumulation

Whales added about 600 million DOGE since 12 October, lifting tracked holdings to roughly 56.21 billion tokens, according to analyst Ali Martinez via CoinGape.

Relative weakness

Dogecoin fell 2.11% on Saturday against 0.74% for Bitcoin (Investing.com), reflecting weaker demand for higher-risk coins.

Cardano Outlook: Rejection at 0.2705 Leaves 0.1976 Support in View

0.2211 -0.0309 (-12.27%) week Range 0.2157–0.2569

Outlook: Bias is bearish while Cardano trades below 0.2705. The 12.27% weekly fall was the steepest of the five majors and returned price to the base of the rising channel built since May. We prefer selling rallies towards 0.2569, with the 0.1976 average the first area of support.

Cardano weekly chart: price at 0.2211 at the lower edge of a rising channel after rejection at the 0.2705 average, with the 0.1976 average just beneath.

  • Last candle: opened 0.2519, high 0.2569, low 0.2157 and a close at 0.2211, a large red body.
  • Momentum: RSI at 47.27 is below 50 and above its average at 44.74.

Key technical levels

0.2569 is last week’s high and 0.2705 the average that rejected it. Support is 0.1976, the average beneath the channel base, then 0.1500. A weekly close below 0.1976 would break the channel and expose 0.1500; a close above 0.2705 would restore the rebound.

Conclusion

The theme is inflation anxiety without a Fed voice. With policymakers silent, claims and Friday’s surveys decide whether the 28 October meeting is priced as a hold or a hike. A weekly close below 79,694 for Bitcoin would challenge the view that the August breakout remains intact.

Ether is the weakest chart, followed by Cardano, XRP and Dogecoin. Bitcoin is the only major showing a constructive structure, which is why it carries the lone long idea.

The desk approach is to work from the stated zones, treat every level as conditional, size positions so that a stop is a manageable event, and reduce exposure ahead of Thursday’s 12:30 GMT release.

Frequently Asked Questions

What could move Bitcoin between 19 and 23 October?

US jobless claims on Thursday and the flash PMIs and Michigan inflation expectations on Friday are the main data points. Fund flows, Treasury auctions and technology earnings also shape risk appetite while the Fed is silent.

Why does Ether look weaker than Bitcoin?

Ether was rejected at its longer average and remains inside a falling channel, while its funds recorded outflows on four of five sessions last week. Bitcoin defended its lows and still sits above its rising averages.

How do Fed rate expectations affect crypto prices?

Higher expected rates lift Treasury yields and the dollar, which raises the opportunity cost of holding assets that pay no income. Hot inflation data therefore tends to pressure crypto, while softer data eases that pressure.

What is a weekly close and why does it matter?

Crypto trades continuously, so the weekly candle closes at the end of the weekly session. Traders treat a close beyond support or resistance as stronger evidence than an intraday move, because it filters out short-lived spikes.

When is the next Federal Reserve decision?

The Federal Open Market Committee meets on 27–28 October, a week after the period covered here. Policymakers have been in their blackout since Saturday 17 October, so no scheduled speeches are due before the decision.
