Alphabet on the Edge: Tonight’s Earnings Put $315 on the Line

Alphabet is down about 22% from its May record, has slipped below its multi-month support, and reports Q3 after the US close today with options pricing a ±6% swing. Cloud is booming, but capex and cash flow will decide the reaction. This is the plan for both outcomes, with exact entries, stops and targets.

The thesis in four lines

  • The business is strong. Q2 Cloud revenue grew 82% to $24.8B, the Cloud backlog was reported near $514B, and Alphabet has beaten revenue estimates 14 quarters running.
  • The stock punishes spending, not misses. After Q2 it fell about 7% despite a beat, because 2026 capex was lifted to $195–205B and free cash flow turned negative (about −$5.9B).
  • Trend is damaged. GOOGL sits below its 50- and 200-day averages and lost about 6% in October as AI names sold off.
  • Sentiment is turning. Today’s AI rebound, led by SK Hynix’s record results and a KOSPI surge of 6.6%, gives the print a friendlier backdrop than a week ago. The Fed decision at 2 pm ET is the other swing factor.

Daily chart: the triangle has already broken

Alphabet Class C (GOOG) daily chart on 28 October 2026 showing a break below the rising triangle support, with RSI near 32.5
GOOG (Class C), daily, NASDAQ. Source: CSFX Research via TradingView, 28 Oct 2026. Last $316.83 (+0.84%), pre-market $319.81.

The chart shows price slipping out of the bottom of its multi-month rising-support structure and trading beneath its moving averages, which fits the bearish trend read above. The RSI sits near 32.5, close to oversold, so a relief bounce is plausible and it is why Plan A waits for a confirmed hold of the $315 area rather than buying blind. GOOG (Class C) and GOOGL (Class A) usually trade close together, so the levels are a good guide for both, though check your own platform’s price.

The trade plan

With a ±$19 implied range, holding a full position through the print is a coin flip with gap risk. Instead, wait for tomorrow’s first hour and trade the side the market confirms.

Plan A · Long on a confirmed hold of support
Trigger
Opens above $316.83 and holds above $315.30 through the first hour
Entry zone
$320–326
Stop
$308 (below the July low)
Targets
$342, then $359.44
Reward : risk
About 1.3R to T1, 2.4R to T2 (from $323)

Bullish inputs: Cloud at or above roughly $28.9B, capex guidance steady, free cash flow back above zero.

Plan B · Short or stand aside on a support failure
Trigger
Gaps down and closes below $314.90
Entry zone
$309–313 on a failed bounce
Stop
$322
Targets
$300.44, then $270.70
Reward : risk
About 1.2R to T1, 4R to T2 (from $311)

Bearish inputs: another capex raise, early 2027 spending ramp, Cloud margin compression, or Search growth slowing.

No-trade zone: a muddy reaction that stays between $316 and $330 tells you nothing. Skip it and wait for a close beyond either side.

Risk management

  • Size so a stop-out costs no more than 0.5–1% of the account; earnings gaps can skip stops entirely.
  • Reported Q2 EPS of $9.11 included large investment gains, so compare underlying EPS (about $2.85) rather than headline growth.
  • A hawkish Fed today, with a December hike being discussed by some desks, can overwhelm a good Alphabet print.
  • Oil near $111 Brent after a Saudi refinery attack adds macro noise to growth stocks.
Bottom line: Alphabet has strong fundamentals, a stretched sentiment backdrop and a market fixated on capex. Let the first hour pick the side, buy support-holds toward $359, and respect a close below $314.90 as a break.
