U.S. Session Report: S&P 500 Slips to 7,775 as WTI Jumps 5% to $92.77, USD/CAD Eases to 1.4243, USD/CHF Steady at 0.8330, Gold Holds $4,117, US 20Y at 5.71%, Bitcoin Slides to $81,200

Wall Street is lower for a second session as an oil spike rekindles inflation fears. WTI is up about 5% and Brent above $105 after more tanker attacks near Hormuz, reports that the White House wants Iran strike options before the midterms, and production shut-ins ahead of Hurricane Isaias. The 10-year Treasury yield touched about 5.35%, near its highest since 2002, before easing to 5.31%, while Fed Governor Waller said more hikes are likely needed but need not come at consecutive meetings. Jobless claims fell to 197K, keeping the labour market in a low-hire, low-fire mode.

USD/CAD is 1.4243, USD/CHF 0.8330, spot gold $4,116.89, WTI $92.77, S&P 500 7,775.18, the US 20-year yield 5.71%, Bitcoin about $81,225 and XRP about $1.35. Focus: the 30-year Treasury auction (17:00 GMT), Iran headlines, Isaias landfall (late Friday) and US CPI on 14 October. Snapshot compiled from sources timestamped up to about 15:30 GMT (21:00 IST).

USD/CAD trades at 1.4243, off 0.10%, after Asian buyers pushed it toward 1.4270 earlier in the day. The 5% jump in WTI is lending the Loonie support, offsetting the pull of a hawkish Fed and 10-year Treasury yields near 5.31%. The pair sits only a few pips under the 1.4295 top printed earlier this week, its highest since April 2025, and FXStreet still reads the week-long range as a bullish consolidation. Monday’s low near 1.4210 is first support; a break exposes 1.4180. Above 1.4270, a retest of 1.4295 opens. Levels are conditional.

USD/CHF is flat near 0.8330 as franc safe-haven demand offsets the Fed-SNB rate gap. UOB expects a 0.8310-0.8345 intraday band and keeps a 0.8245-0.8365 range for the next one to three weeks after yesterday’s 0.8311/0.8341 range gave no fresh clues. FXStreet notes rallies have been capped below the 0.8320 area since Friday’s dip to 0.8225, so the 0.8345 ceiling matters for the US session. A close above 0.8365 would break the range; below 0.8300, 0.8245 is in play. Levels are conditional.

Waller’s call for further hikes, a dollar index near 102.25 and 10-year yields above 5.3% keep the metal pinned in a $4,100-$4,200 band, below its key daily moving averages; Goldman sees risk toward $4,400 only on a higher path and has trimmed its year-end view to $4,900. In the US Gulf, about 500,000 bpd, roughly a quarter of offshore output, is shut in ahead of Hurricane Isaias, due to make landfall late Friday or early Saturday. The US 20-year yield is steady at 5.71% after the curve’s morning spike, when the 10-year touched about 5.35%, near its highest since 2002, before easing to 5.31%. The 20-year is up roughly 42bp in a month and still trades above the 30-year (5.66%), a sign of thin demand at that maturity. Waller’s view that more hikes are needed, with flexibility on timing, keeps the floor firm. The 30-year auction at 17:00 GMT is the key test: a weak tail lifts 5.75-5.80%; strong demand pulls it toward 5.64%. Levels are conditional.

Section 3 · Next Session

What to Expect from the Next Session

  1. 30-year auction and the long end. The 17:00 GMT 30-year sale tests demand with the 20-year at 5.71% and the 10-year near 5.31%. A weak tail would lift long yields toward 5.75-5.80% on the 20-year, pressure the S&P 500 toward 7,740 and keep gold capped under $4,150; solid demand could ease yields and give equities and bullion a lift.
  2. Iran, Hormuz and Hurricane Isaias. Any confirmation of renewed US strikes or more tanker attacks would extend WTI toward 93.50-95.00 and support the Loonie, keeping USD/CAD below 1.4270; a de-escalation headline or a weaker storm track could pull crude back toward $88-90.
  3. Crypto and the Fed path into CPI. Bitcoin’s hold of $80,000 and XRP’s $1.35 floor depend on ETF flows and yields. With markets pricing about 85% odds of a hike by December and US CPI due 14 October, rallies in BTC and XRP may stay capped by $82,000 and $1.40.
Section 4 · Market Drivers

What Is Moving the Market

Fed, yields and the dollar

Waller said further hikes will likely be needed if data come in as expected, but left room for a pause on 28 October. Futures see about 85% odds of at least one hike by December. The dollar index sits near 102.25 and the 10-year yield touched about 5.35% before easing (Federal Reserve, Bloomberg, Trading Economics).

Oil and geopolitics

Nine tankers were attacked around Hormuz in a week, flows are about 30% below pre-war norms per Kpler, and Trump says he no longer wants an Iran deal. In the US Gulf, roughly 500,000 bpd is shut in ahead of Hurricane Isaias, due ashore late Friday or early Saturday (CNBC, Reuters, NBC News).

Equities and earnings

Chip stocks lead losses despite TSMC’s 51% revenue jump; Panmure Liberum warns an AI bubble could burst in 2027-28. PepsiCo beat but cut its EPS growth outlook, and Chipotle rose on a Starbucks takeover report. FactSet sees Q3 earnings up about 29.5% (TheStreet, Yahoo Finance).

Crypto and havens

Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw about $485M of outflows on 7 October, the largest since June, and long liquidations continue. Gold holds near $4,116.89 after a two-month low, while the Swiss franc is steady and the Loonie leans on oil (CryptoTimes, FXStreet, 24/7 Wall St.).
