US Session Report: Nasdaq Surges 2% on Chip Rally as Oil and Yields Slide, Bitcoin Reclaims $85,000

USD/CAD · USD/CHF · Gold · Crude Oil (WTI) · Dow Jones · US 10Y · BTC/USD · LTC/USD — technical analysis with conditional reference levels

Wall Street is trading firmly higher in Monday's US session: the Nasdaq is up about 2% and the S&P 500 about 1.5% as chip stocks rebound, while the Dow adds roughly 340 points after last week's worst run since March. Crude oil is sliding on hopes of US-Iran diplomacy and a recovery in Saudi exports, easing Treasury yields to just under 5% and weighing on the Canadian dollar. Bitcoin's short squeeze has carried it above $85,000 and pulled Litecoin sharply higher, while gold slips on firm Fed-hike expectations. This report sets out the technical levels, fundamental drivers and scheduled events for USD/CAD, USD/CHF, Gold, WTI crude, the Dow Jones, the US 10-year yield, BTC/USD and LTC/USD. Compiled during the US session on 21 September 2026 (news through about 18:00 UTC / 2:00 pm ET). Levels are the latest prints retrievable at compile time from Investing.com pages and newswire and exchange feeds; capture times differ by instrument (stated on each block and in the board) and will differ from a live feed.

Technical Levels for Eight Instruments

Each analysis is conditional and lists a bias, resistance and support levels. Levels are technical references, not forecasts.

Invalidation1.3950
Target 11.4080
Target 21.4150
Target 31.4250

Session Performance

USD/CAD is quoted at 1.4005 (+0.16%) on Investing.com, inside a 1.3983-1.4023 range after a 1.3990 open and a 1.3983 previous close. Friday's 1.4014 high was the strongest print since 7 August, and the loonie was heading for an eighth straight daily loss into that close. Falling crude adds a further headwind for CAD during the US session.

Technical Structure

Investing.com's daily, weekly and monthly technical readings are all Strong Buy and the moving-average summary is Buy. The 52-week range is 1.3481-1.4250. Scotiabank puts fair value nearer 1.3910 and calls spot stretched, while noting the 1.3990 retracement barrier has now given way.

Confirmation Level

A US-session hold above 1.3990 and a push through the 1.4023 day high would open 1.4080, then 1.4150. Bank of Canada Governor Macklem speaks in Halifax today: a repeat of upside-inflation warnings could firm BoC tightening bets and slow the CAD slide, while a softer tone would extend the move.

Alternative Scenario

A break back below 1.3983 and then 1.3950 would signal that the post-Fed dollar push is fading, exposing 1.3910. The bullish setup is invalidated by a 1-hour close under 1.3950.

Session Performance

USD/CHF is quoted near 0.8212 (-0.11%) in Investing.com's 08:11 GMT snapshot versus a 0.8221 previous close; earlier in the session the pair traded 0.8217-0.8233. EUR/CHF is steady near 0.9445 (+0.02%), so the move is a dollar story rather than a franc-specific one.

Technical Structure

Daily, weekly and 5-hour readings are Strong Buy on Investing.com, with the monthly reading Neutral. The 52-week range is 0.7604-0.8267, leaving the pair about 55 pips under its yearly high. The policy gap is the driver: the Fed hiked to 3.75%-4.00% last week while the Swiss National Bank holds at 0%.

Confirmation Level

A clean break above 0.8233 and the 0.8267 yearly high would open 0.8300 and 0.8350. Tomorrow's Fed speakers (Williams, Jefferson, Barkin) and any further lift in October hike odds, currently about 53%, would support that path.

Alternative Scenario

Falling US yields or risk-off flows could revive the franc's haven bid; a break of 0.8180 would expose 0.8150. The bullish setup is invalidated by a 1-hour close below 0.8160.

Session Performance

December gold futures trade near $4,392 (-0.74%) after opening at $4,413, the highest open in over a week, and a Friday close near $4,425. Spot gold is around $4,354 (-0.5%). A firm dollar and elevated Treasury yields are offsetting safe-haven demand linked to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

Technical Structure

Bullion is drifting back inside last week's range after failing to hold its Monday-open highs. Kitco flags a more crowded long base in gold than in silver, and FXStreet notes the Fed's updated projections point to at least one more hike this year, which keeps the opportunity cost of holding gold high.

Confirmation Level

A recovery above $4,413 and Friday's roughly $4,425 close would neutralise the bearish tilt and expose $4,450. A sharper fall in Treasury yields, or a softer dollar after Tuesday's Fed speakers, would support that scenario.

Alternative Scenario

A break below $4,350 opens $4,300, the area Kitco's headline treats as support, then $4,250. The bearish setup is invalidated by a 1-hour close above $4,440.

Session Performance

WTI (November contract) is near $93.49 (-2.70%) while Brent trades just above $101. Reuters describes an 11-day low as traders bet on diplomacy in the Iran war around this week's UN meeting, and CNBC's live coverage has US crude down roughly 4% and Brent about 3% during the US session.

Technical Structure

Prices have touched their lowest since 10 September. Saudi exports reportedly rose above 4 million barrels per day in September versus 2.4 million in August, easing near-term shortage fears, although Houthi attacks and disrupted Hormuz traffic keep a risk premium in place. Russia's planned extension of its diesel export ban keeps distillates tight.

Confirmation Level

A reclaim of $94.50 followed by $96.10 (Friday's close) would suggest the sell-off has run its course and re-expose $98. A stall in UN-week diplomacy or a fresh shipping incident is the main upside trigger.

Alternative Scenario

A break below $92.00 would open $90.00 and $88.00 as more risk premium unwinds. The bearish setup is invalidated by a 1-hour close above $96.20. Quoted levels are for the November contract; front-month October quotes on some venues sit higher.

Session Performance

The Dow is up roughly 341 points (+0.66%) near 52,020 after Friday's 51,682.64 close on Investing.com; Yahoo Finance showed 51,927.75 (+0.47%) around midday ET. The Nasdaq is up about 2% and the S&P 500 about 1.5% as semiconductors bounce, oil falls and Treasury yields ease.

Technical Structure

The Dow lost 1.7% last week, its weakest week since March and a third straight weekly decline. It is back above Friday's 51,826.78 high, and the 16 September high of 52,173.70 is the next hurdle. Breadth is the caution: Barchart data cited by Yahoo Finance showed more than half of S&P 500 stocks below their 200-day average. The 52-week range is 45,057-54,744.

Confirmation Level

Holding above 51,827 into the close would keep the rebound intact and open 52,173, then 52,336 (15 September high) and 52,573. Strength in AI leaders and a constructive Trump-Xi summit on Thursday are the supportive catalysts.

Alternative Scenario

A slip back below 51,827 and Friday's 51,683 close would show the rally lacks breadth, exposing 51,497. The bullish setup is invalidated by a 1-hour close under 51,680.

Falling oil is outweighing Chicago Fed President Goolsbee's warning that persistent supply shocks and AI-driven demand could require higher rates.

Technical Structure

The 10-year closed near 5% last Tuesday, its highest close since 2007, after an intraday peak of 5.04%. The long-bond ETF TLT ended last week at its lowest weekly close since its 2002 launch. Yields have since slipped back under 5% following the Fed's first hike in three years to 3.75%-4.00%.

Confirmation Level

A move back above 4.996% would put 5.04% back in play and signal bond weakness resuming. Tuesday's 2-year note auction and three Fed speakers are the next tests, alongside oil.

Alternative Scenario

Continued weakness in crude and softer data would pull the yield toward 4.93% and 4.87%. The bearish-yield setup is invalidated by a close above 5.02%.

Session Performance

BTC/USD trades near $85,235 (about +5.8% over 24 hours) after touching roughly $85,400, its highest since late January. The rally from Sunday's low near $80,300 accelerated when about $262 million of short positions were liquidated within an hour around $84,000.

Technical Structure

Bitcoin closed last week near $81,120, above its 50-week average for the first time in about 45 weeks, and cleared the 4 September high of $82,284. Daily RSI is near 70 and US spot-ETF holders are close to break-even around $86,000. Open interest rose about 7.6% to $156 billion, pointing to fresh leverage as well as covering.

Confirmation Level

Sustained trade above $84,000-$85,000 would open $86,000 and then $88,000, where one analyst sees little resting sell interest. Treasury-company buying (2,305 BTC reported for Strategy and Strive) is a supportive backdrop.

Alternative Scenario

Liquidity is thicker below than above (one analyst's data shows roughly 12 times more), so a rejection at $86,000 and a break under $84,000 could unwind toward $82,284 and the $81,120 weekly close. The bullish setup is invalidated by a 1-hour close under $82,200.

Section 3 · Fundamental Drivers

What’s Moving Markets in the US Session

Key themes shaping FX, rates, commodities, equities and crypto today

Fed Repricing Keeps the Dollar Bid

DriverThe Fed lifted its target range to 3.75%-4.00% last week, its first hike in three years, and 16 of 18 officials project at least one more this year (12 see one, four see two). Chicago Fed President Goolsbee argued today that persistent supply shocks and AI-driven demand may force rates higher. Traders still put October hike odds near 53%.

WatchTomorrow's speakers (Williams, Jefferson, Barkin) and the 2-year note auction. Any push above 55%-60% October odds would extend dollar and front-end yield strength.

Oil Slides on Diplomacy and Saudi Supply

DriverCrude is at multi-day lows as investors bet on US-Iran diplomacy around this week's UN General Assembly and a partial recovery in Saudi exports. Falling oil is easing Treasury yields and helping equities, but hurting the Canadian dollar.

WatchHouthi attacks, Hormuz shipping and any breakdown in talks. A reversal higher in oil would quickly push yields, USD/CAD and gold back the other way.

AI Chip Rally and the Trump-Xi Summit

DriverSemiconductors led the market higher, with AMD hitting a record and Intel and Qualcomm sharply up. Treasury Secretary Bessent's weekend talks with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng, including a proposed AI-safety notification channel, set the tone ahead of Thursday's Trump-Xi summit on the tariff truce and AI.

WatchBreadth: more than half of S&P 500 stocks were below their 200-day average at the weekend, so a narrow rally leaves the Dow vulnerable if chips stall.

CAD: Wider Spreads, Lower Oil, Hawkish BoC

DriverThe loonie was heading for an eighth straight daily loss into Friday as the US-Canada yield gap widened after the Fed hike. Scotiabank sees spot as stretched versus a 1.3910 fair value, and notes a weaker CAD is unhelpful for a Bank of Canada worried about inflation.

WatchMacklem's remarks in Halifax today. A hawkish repeat could slow USD/CAD; a softer tone opens 1.4080.

CHF: Zero Rates Cap Haven Demand

DriverWith the SNB at 0% and the Fed at 3.75%-4.00%, the policy gap keeps USD/CHF supported near its 52-week high of 0.8267, while the SNB has repeatedly signalled willingness to lean against excess franc strength.

WatchA drop in US yields or a sharp risk-off turn would test that dynamic and bring the franc's haven bid back.

Crypto: Short Squeeze and Treasury Buying

DriverBitcoin's weekly close above its 50-week average triggered a wave of short liquidations, with roughly $262 million wiped out in an hour near $84,000. Strategy and Strive added 2,305 BTC, and falling oil and yields helped risk appetite, even after the Senate blocked the CLARITY Act last week.

WatchWhether BTC holds $84,000; a failure would leave altcoins like Litecoin, which has jumped about 11% since Sunday, exposed to a sharp reversal.

Section 5 · Session Outlook

Conditional Outlook

Technical, fundamental and event factors combined into conditional scenarios. No unconditional forecasts are made.

Dollar, CAD & Franc

If Macklem stays hawkish but oil keeps sliding, USD/CAD should hold above 1.3990 with 1.4080 in view; USD/CHF stays supported above 0.8180.

If US yields fall further or the dollar loses its post-Fed bid, expect USD/CAD back toward 1.3950-1.3910 and USD/CHF toward 0.8150.

Gold & Oil

If gold cannot reclaim $4,413-$4,425 and yields stay near 4.95%, the tilt is toward $4,350 then $4,300. Oil stays capped below $96.10 while diplomacy hopes hold.

If UN-week talks stall or Hormuz headlines flare, oil can retrace quickly toward $96-$98 and pull gold, yields and USD/CAD with it.

Dow Jones

If the index holds above 51,827 into the close, 52,173 and 52,336 come into view, helped by chips and the Thursday summit.

If the chip bounce fades and breadth stays weak, a slide back under 51,683 exposes 51,497 and last week’s downtrend.

US 10-Year Yield

If oil stays soft, the yield should stay under 4.996% with 4.93% and 4.87% as downside markers.

If Fed speakers push October odds higher or the 2-year auction is weak, a close above 5.02% would re-target 5.04% and higher.

Crypto: BTC & LTC

If Bitcoin holds $84,000, BTC can extend toward $86,000-$88,000 and LTC toward $66-$71.50.

If the squeeze fades below $84,000, expect BTC back toward $82,284-$81,120 and LTC toward $58.30-$57.19, with the higher-beta altcoin falling faster.

Section 6 · Conclusion

Summary

The US session is dominated by a risk-on move: chips lead the Nasdaq about 2% higher, oil and Treasury yields slide, and Bitcoin’s short squeeze has taken it above $85,000. The critical levels to watch are 4.996% on the US 10-year yield (the 5% line), $96.10 on WTI, 51,827 on the Dow and $84,000 on Bitcoin. The main catalysts are Bank of Canada Governor Macklem’s speech today, Tuesday’s Fed speakers and 2-year note auction, and Thursday’s Trump-Xi summit. The principal volatility risk sits in crude oil and crypto: a UN-week diplomatic stumble or a Hormuz incident could reverse oil quickly, while a failure to hold $84,000 in Bitcoin would leave Litecoin exposed to a sharp unwind.

Section 7 · FAQ

US Session FAQ

Answers based on the current session

Why are US stocks rallying today after last week's Fed hike?

The Nasdaq is up about 2% and the S&P 500 about 1.5% as semiconductors rebound (AMD at a record, Intel and Qualcomm sharply higher), while crude oil and Treasury yields slide. The Dow is up roughly 340 points near 52,020 after its worst week since March, helped by optimism ahead of Thursday's Trump-Xi summit.

Why is Bitcoin above $85,000 and Litecoin surging?
