Market Overview

Markets on Friday 16 October are trading a softer dollar after Fed Chair Warsh gave nothing away. Speaking in Bangkok at 03:30 GMT, he said he does not pre-judge meetings and that the Fed is “not in that business anymore”, giving no signal on the 27–28 October FOMC. The dollar index fell to a 10-day low near 101.80 and is set for its first weekly fall in five weeks. Bloomberg reported hike expectations dropping to about 17% from roughly 30% during the talk, while CME FedWatch priced a 72% chance of a hold. This week’s US data was hot: September CPI rose 3.7% on the year and PPI rose 1.3% on the month and 6.3% on the year. Yet the US 10-year yield fell about 10 bp to near 5.09% as AI-stock stress sent money into Treasuries; the Nikkei lost nearly 5% and the KOSPI almost 8% on Thursday.

Currencies moved on that dollar slide. EUR/USD rose to 1.1239 from a 17-month low near 1.1110, after losing more than 3% in five weeks on France’s debt and a winter energy squeeze. USD/JPY slipped under 158 to 157.89 as Finance Minister Katayama’s intervention warning and a US Treasury view that Japan no longer faces deflation capped the dollar. NZD/USD jumped 0.7% to 0.5660 and the Australian dollar rose to 0.6950. USD/CHF fell 0.27% to 0.8244 and broke its rising channel, while GBP/CHF held 1.0987 on the channel floor after UK GDP unexpectedly grew 0.1% in August. USD/CAD eased to 1.4166 from an 18-month high near 1.4300; Canada lost 68.3K jobs in September and the BoC rate of 2.25% sits well below the Fed’s 3.75–4.00%.

The next tests are Eurozone final inflation data today, Wall Street’s reaction to the AI sell-off tonight, and the Fed blackout from 17 October before the FOMC on 27–28 October. Our bias is bearish on rallies for USD/JPY from 158.50 and USD/CHF from 0.8290, and bullish on pullbacks for EUR/USD from 1.1200, NZD/USD from 0.5640, USD/CAD from 1.4075 and GBP/CHF from 1.0975.

Key highlights

  • Warsh, no signal: he declined to pre-judge October; the dollar index fell to about 101.80 and October hike odds eased to roughly 17–28%.
  • EUR/USD bounced to 1.1239 from the channel floor; the 1.1282 fast average is the first cap.
  • USD/CHF broke its rising channel at 0.8244 and NZD/USD broke its falling channel at 0.5660, the two medium-conviction setups.
  • USD/JPY is squeezed inside a triangle at 157.89 with intervention talk capping 158.50.
  • USD/CAD and GBP/CHF sit on their fast averages; dips to 1.4075 and 1.0975 are the long entries.

Trade Setups for Today

Six setups published after the Warsh speech on Friday 16 October 2026. Each carries a defined invalidation level: a 1-hour close beyond the stop negates the idea. Setups are valid through the Friday session, before the Fed blackout starts on 17 October.

Dollar Scenario Analysis

With Warsh’s speech out of the way, the dollar’s next move depends on whether the AI-led bond rally continues or reverses into the weekend and the Fed blackout. Select a scenario to view the expected path for each pair, with levels.

Rebound: AI stocks stabilise and US yields recover

A recovery in equities and a bounce in the 10-year yield above 5.20% would revive October hike bets, lift the dollar and send EUR/USD, NZD/USD and GBP/CHF back to their stops, while USD/JPY, USD/CAD and USD/CHF retest their highs.

USD/JPY Analysis: Price at 157.89 Squeezes Inside a Triangle Under 158.20 as Warsh Gives No Hike Signal and Intervention Talk Caps the Upside

157.891 −0.086 (−0.05%) day Day range 157.799–158.185 Chart quote, 07:25 GMT

Outlook: Bias is neutral to bearish below 158.50. USD/JPY traded at 157.891 on Friday 16 October, down 0.05%, slipping under 158.00 after Fed Chair Warsh declined to pre-judge the October meeting and the dollar index fell to a 10-day low near 101.80. The preferred approach is a rally short at 158.50 with a stop at 159.50 and targets at 157.00 and 155.80, sized for low conviction.

Daily chart structure

  • Price is compressed between a falling line from the late-July high near 164.0 and a rising line from the early-September low near 152.9; the apex is close, so a breakout is near. Support is 157.50, which FXStreet calls pivotal after Warsh.
  • The fast average at 157.911 and mid average at 157.718 sit on price, while the long average at 159.441 caps rallies; a daily close above 159.50 would break the triangle higher.
  • RSI reads 51.27, just under its signal line at 53.61, a flat reading. Finance Minister Katayama has warned Japan will intervene if needed and a US Treasury official said Japan no longer faces deflation, which limits the upside; the 52-week high is 164.00.

Rationale: Entry is a rally to the 158.50 area, above the triangle top and below the 159.44 long average, where intervention talk has capped price. The stop is above the long average, and the targets are the 157.00 area below pivotal support and the 155.80 zone above the September low.

Invalidation: A 1-hour close above 159.50. A hot US data surprise or a rebound in the 10-year yield above 5.20% that restores October hike bets is the main risk.

NZD/USD Analysis: Kiwi Jumps 0.7% to 0.5660 and Breaks the Falling Channel on a Softer Dollar, With the 0.5775 Averages Ahead

0.56602 +0.00388 (+0.69%) day Day range 0.56184–0.56608 Chart quote, 07:25 GMT

Outlook: Bias is bullish above the 0.5636 fast average. NZD/USD traded at 0.56602 on Friday 16 October, up 0.69%, after rising from 0.5621 in early Asia as the dollar index fell to a 10-day low near 101.80 and risk-sensitive currencies bounced; the Australian dollar rose to 0.6950 on the same move. The preferred approach is a retest long at 0.5640 with a stop at 0.5575 and targets at 0.5770 and 0.5850.

  • Price broke above a falling channel from the late-August high near 0.5990; the October low near 0.5575 sits inside the old channel and is the line the bulls must defend.
  • The fast average at 0.5636 now sits under price, while the mid average at 0.5775 and long average at 0.5782 are clustered overhead, so 0.5770–0.5782 is the first supply zone.
  • RSI reads 47.72, rising sharply from its signal line at 30.48, a fast recovery from oversold. The move is mostly dollar weakness after Warsh withheld guidance; a reversal in AI stocks that lifts the dollar would hit the kiwi quickly.

Rationale: Entry is a retest of the 0.5640 area, where the broken channel line and the 0.5636 fast average meet and where a failed break would be exposed. The stop is below the 0.5578 October low, and the targets are the 0.5770 mid and long averages and the 0.5850 area.

Outlook: Bias is neutral to bullish while EUR/USD holds the channel floor near 1.1110. EUR/USD traded at 1.12386 on Friday 16 October, up 0.18%, after a drop of more than 3% in five weeks on France’s debt worries and a winter energy squeeze ended near 1.1110. The dollar is set for its first weekly fall in five weeks. The preferred approach is a pullback long at 1.1200 with a stop at 1.1095 and targets at 1.1330 and 1.1468, sized for low conviction.

  • RSI reads 39.89, rising from oversold and above its signal line at 25.42. A Reuters report noted AI-stock stress sent money into Treasuries and out of the dollar; Eurozone final inflation data is due today, while France’s budget crisis and energy costs keep euro rallies fragile.

USD/CAD Analysis: Price at 1.4166 Slips Back to the Fast Average From an 18-Month High as the Dollar Softens, With Canada’s Job Losses Backing Dips

Outlook: Bias is neutral to bullish while USD/CAD holds the 1.4037 mid average. USD/CAD traded at 1.41663 on Friday 16 October, down 0.14%, retreating from the 1.4300 area as the dollar softened. Canada lost 68.3K jobs in September, which cut Bank of Canada hike bets for 28 October, and the BoC rate of 2.25% sits well below the Fed range of 3.75–4.00%. The preferred approach is a pullback long at 1.4075 with a stop at 1.3995 and targets at 1.4190 and 1.4300.

Conclusion

Warsh’s refusal to pre-judge October leaves the dollar offered into the weekend, and the AI-led bond rally keeps yields heavy. A dollar slide favours EUR/USD at 1.1330 then 1.1468, NZD/USD at 0.5770 then 0.5850 and USD/CHF at 0.8182 then 0.8118; a rebound favours USD/JPY at 159.50 and USD/CAD at 1.4190. NZD/USD and USD/CHF carry medium conviction; USD/JPY, EUR/USD, GBP/CHF and USD/CAD carry low conviction.

Treat every level as conditional and wait for 1-hour closes beyond a stop before judging an idea invalid. Size positions smaller into Wall Street tonight and the Fed blackout, because AI-stock headlines, yen intervention talk and Fed repricing can gap the dollar quickly. Our approach is to trade the levels, not the headlines.
