The week of 10–14 August 2026 in the Asian session was defined by fading conviction rather than fresh shocks. USD/JPY clawed back roughly half of the ground it lost to the confirmed joint US-Japan intervention, drifting from the high 157s back above 159 as traders concluded that, absent a fresh official operation, the underlying rate-differential pressure on the yen had not gone away. Tuesday’s Reserve Bank of Australia decision proved a genuine non-event for policy — a hold at 4.35%, as universally expected — but Governor Bullock’s press conference struck a more balanced tone than markets had priced, flagging a cooling in consumer spending and a shifting housing sector alongside resilience elsewhere. Wednesday’s US Consumer Price Index landed almost exactly on consensus, with headline inflation easing to 3.4% YoY and core to 2.5%, an outcome that did little to resolve the tension between last week’s shockingly weak July payrolls print and lingering price pressures. In commodities, copper notched a fresh all-time COMEX high above $6.77/lb before consolidating, as the DRC’s concentrate export ban and record-low LME inventories continued to overwhelm any demand-side caution out of China. Hong Kong equities were the week’s clearest underperformer, falling in back-to-back sessions as disappointing AI-spending commentary from Tencent and JD.com’s earnings soured sentiment toward the region’s tech-heavy complex just as offshore investors began trimming China exposure faster than the mainland’s own buyers. In crypto, both XRP and Litecoin continued to trade as pure technical instruments, with the CLARITY Act’s now-confirmed slip to a 14 September Senate return leaving the sector without its clearest scheduled catalyst. The set-up into the new week centers on whether Monday’s flood of Chinese activity data confirms or challenges the demand-side concerns already priced into AUD/USD and copper, whether Wednesday’s FOMC minutes reveal how seriously new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s committee is treating July’s rare three-way hawkish dissent, and whether Thursday’s Australian jobs report reopens the door to further RBA tightening talk.
📋 This Week at a Glance · 17–21 August 2026
China’s July Data Dump, FOMC Minutes, and Australia’s Jobs Report Define the Asian Session This Week, 17–21 August
The week of 17–21 August 2026 opens the Asian session with USD/JPY back above 159.40, having retraced roughly half of the gains from the confirmed joint US-Japan intervention as speculators test whether officials remain willing to act a second time absent a fresh, disorderly move. Monday brings the heaviest single-day data load of the month out of China — July industrial production, retail sales, fixed-asset investment, and home prices, alongside a National Bureau of Statistics press conference — all of which will be read directly into AUD/USD, copper, and the Hang Seng. Wednesday’s FOMC minutes from the contentious 28–29 July meeting, at which three regional Fed presidents dissented in favor of a hike for the first time since 2016, land in the Asian session early Thursday and carry outsized weight given new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s publicly dovish leanings heading into the 27–29 August Jackson Hole symposium. Thursday is the week’s single busiest day for the Asia-Pacific docket: Australia’s July labour force survey at 11:30am AEST, China’s monthly Loan Prime Rate decision, and Alibaba’s fiscal first-quarter earnings all land within hours of each other, following a soft precedent set by Tencent and JD.com’s results last week. In crypto, XRP and Litecoin remain without a scheduled catalyst, with the CLARITY Act’s next realistic Senate floor vote still not due before 14 September.
🇯🇵 Yen Weakness Resumes, No Fresh Intervention🇨🇳 China July Activity Data Mon🇺🇸 FOMC Minutes Wed (Asia Thu AM)🇦🇺 Australia Jobs Report Thu⚖️ CLARITY Act Still Shelved to 14 Sep
Four threads carry into the Asian session this week, each tied to its own asset: renewed intervention-watch positioning for USD/JPY, at 159.40 after clawing back half of last month’s confirmed operation; Monday’s China data avalanche and Thursday’s jobs report for AUD/USD (0.7060); a still-tight supply picture for copper ($6.59/lb) heading into Wednesday’s FOMC minutes; and another catalyst-free stretch for XRP ($1.04) and Litecoin ($44.50) as the CLARITY Act remains parked until mid-September.
1. USD/JPY — does the yen’s retreat toward 160 force officials back to the table?USD/JPY at 159.40 has retraced roughly half of the gains that followed last month’s confirmed joint US-Japan intervention, with the absence of any follow-up action this past week emboldening speculators to lean against the currency again. With no BOJ meeting until September and official intervention data still not due until 31 August, CSFX sees this week’s real test as whether a push back toward the 160–161 area — the general vicinity that triggered the original operation — draws a renewed response, or whether officials are content to let the pair drift given how much last week’s in-line US CPI print has already cooled the broader dollar bid.
2. AUD/USD — China’s data dump and Australia’s own jobs report take over from the RBA.AUD/USD at 0.7060 enters the week with the RBA’s Tuesday hold now in the rear-view mirror, leaving Monday’s flood of Chinese July activity data — industrial production, retail sales, fixed-asset investment, and home prices, all landing within the same release window — as the more immediate swing factor given China’s outsized role in Australian export demand. Thursday’s Australian labour force survey for July is the domestic wildcard: June’s report showed a surprisingly strong 76,300-person employment gain, and a similarly firm July print would revive talk that the RBA’s easing bias is premature even after Tuesday’s Bullock press conference struck a more balanced tone than markets expected.
3. Copper and the Hang Seng — a resilient supply squeeze meets a fragile risk-sentiment backdrop.Copper at $6.59/lb has pulled back modestly from last week’s fresh COMEX all-time high near $6.77/lb, but the structural story — the DRC’s concentrate export ban, elevated US tariff-related stockpiling, and LME inventories near multi-month lows — remains fully intact heading into Monday’s China data, which CSFX expects to matter more for sentiment than for the physical supply-demand balance itself. The Hang Seng, at 25,117, fell for a second straight session Friday as offshore investors trimmed China exposure faster than domestic buyers following disappointing AI-spend commentary from Tencent and JD.com; Alibaba’s fiscal first-quarter results on Thursday, 20 August are the week’s next test of whether that pattern extends across the sector.
4. XRP and Litecoin — trading without a catalyst as the regulatory clock keeps ticking toward September. With the Senate confirmed to remain in recess until 14 September, XRP at $1.04 continues to defend the psychologically important $1.00 level without the CLARITY Act catalyst that had underpinned much of its earlier-2026 narrative. Litecoin, at $44.50, faces a more purely technical question this week: whether its closely watched rising trendline — successfully defended on repeated tests over the past month — holds one more time or finally gives way.

The scheduled Asian-session catalysts that will set the direction across FX, equities, and digital assets for the week of 17–21 August 2026
🇯🇵
Force 1 · The Yen’s Retreat Toward 160 Tests Whether Officials Act Again
USD/JPY at 159.40 has clawed back roughly half of the ground lost to last month’s confirmed joint US-Japan intervention, as a quiet week for official rhetoric let speculators press the currency again. With no BOJ meeting until September and formal intervention data not due until 31 August, CSFX sees a fresh push toward 160–161 as the trigger most likely to test whether Washington and Tokyo are still willing to step in, or whether the calmer tone of last week’s in-line US CPI print takes some of the pressure off.
🇨🇳
Force 2 · China’s Monday Data Dump Sets the Tone for AUD, Copper, and the Hang Seng
Monday’s release of July industrial production, retail sales, fixed-asset investment, and home prices — alongside a National Bureau of Statistics press conference — is the single heaviest data point of the week for Asian markets. Consensus points to a further slowdown in retail sales growth to roughly 0.8% YoY following softer PMI readings; a confirmation of that slowdown would sharpen the demand-side questions already hanging over AUD/USD and the Hang Seng, while CSFX expects copper’s supply-side story to prove more resilient to any single data miss.
🇺🇸
Force 3 · FOMC Minutes Land as a New, Dovish-Leaning Fed Chair Settles In
Wednesday’s release of the minutes from the contentious 28–29 July FOMC meeting — at which three regional Fed presidents dissented in favor of a hike, the first three-way hawkish dissent since 2016 — hits the Asian session early Thursday. The minutes carry outsized weight given new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s public preference for lower rates, and CSFX expects markets to parse the text closely for clues on how the committee’s internal debate is shaping up ahead of the 27–29 August Jackson Hole symposium.

Thesis — Fade Rallies Toward 161.00; Renewed Intervention Risk Caps a Fast Return to the Highs
Having already retraced roughly half of the gains from the confirmed joint operation, USD/JPY is testing whether officials tolerate a further drift back toward the levels that triggered the original intervention. CSFX doubts Washington and Tokyo want to see a fast return above 161 so soon after acting, especially with the FOMC minutes on Wednesday still capable of reviving dollar softness if the tone reads more dovish than expected under new Chair Warsh. CSFX favors fading pushes back toward 161.00 rather than chasing a re-test of the pre-intervention highs.

Thesis — Buy Dips to 0.6990; A Firm Jobs Report Would Reopen the Hawkish RBA Debate
With Tuesday’s RBA hold already priced in and now behind the market, CSFX sees Thursday’s Australian July labour force survey as this week’s clearest domestic swing factor. June’s report showed a surprisingly strong 76,300-person employment gain; a similarly firm July print would revive talk that the RBA’s cautious tone at Tuesday’s press conference undersold the economy’s resilience, supporting AUD/USD through the rate-differential channel. Monday’s China data is the other input worth watching — a confirmed slowdown in Chinese retail sales would be the main downside risk to this setup.
Copper’s pullback from last week’s fresh all-time COMEX high near $6.77/lb looks like consolidation rather than a change in the underlying story. The DRC’s concentrate export ban, near-record LME backwardation, and continued US tariff-related stockpiling all point to genuine physical tightness that a single soft China data point is unlikely to reverse. CSFX continues to view pullbacks toward $6.30 as accumulation opportunities while the supply-side narrative remains intact, though a materially weak Chinese retail sales or industrial production print on Monday is the main risk to monitor.

Thesis — Trade the Pullback Within a Wider Range Until Alibaba’s Earnings Clarify Tech Sentiment
The index’s two-session slide following disappointing AI-spend commentary from Tencent and JD.com has pushed it toward the lower end of its recent range, with offshore investors trimming China exposure faster than the mainland’s own buyers. Monday’s China activity data and Thursday’s Alibaba earnings are the two data points most likely to determine whether this is a genuine trend change or a buyable dip within the broader 22,500–28,000 52-week range; CSFX treats a confirmed dip toward 24,500 as a buying opportunity pending confirmation from those two catalysts.

Thesis — Wait-and-Confirm on the Trendline Test; a Genuine Catalyst Vacuum Argues for Patience
LTC is once again testing the rising trendline that has drawn repeated attention over the past month, with sellers outnumbering buyers through most of last week even as the broader structure held. With the CLARITY Act still shelved until at least 14 September, CSFX sees limited reason to chase strength here; a confirmed bounce off the trendline that holds above $43 would strengthen the bullish case, while a decisive break would revive the downside chatter that has periodically surrounded the token in recent weeks.

Thesis — Range Trade Only; No Realistic Legislative Catalyst Before Mid-September
XRP has not closed a day below $1.00 all year, and CSFX sees that level as the key line in the sand for the week. With the Senate confirmed to remain away from Washington until 14 September, prediction markets now assign the CLARITY Act only a modest chance of becoming law in 2026, and CSFX continues to treat dips toward $0.99–$1.00 as more attractive entries than chasing any bounce toward resistance near $1.12–$1.14.

What Could Move Asian Markets Sharply This Week
The scheduled and unscheduled events that CSFX is watching most closely for the Asian session, 17–21 August 2026
FX INTERVENTION
BOJ / MOF Intervention Watch — Any Time This Week
USD/JPY has retraced roughly half of the gains from last month’s confirmed joint intervention, with no fresh official action this past week. Japan’s monthly intervention data isn’t due until 31 August, so the market is still trading on the memory of the confirmed operation rather than fresh confirmation. A push back toward 160–161 is the level CSFX sees as most likely to test officials’ appetite for a second round.
MACRO
China July Activity Data & Press Conference — Monday, 17 August
China’s National Bureau of Statistics releases July industrial production, retail sales, fixed-asset investment, and home prices alongside a press conference on national economic performance. Consensus points to retail sales growth slowing to roughly 0.8% YoY following weaker July PMI readings; confirmation of a broader slowdown would be directly relevant for AUD/USD, copper, and the Hang Seng.
CENTRAL BANK
FOMC Minutes (28–29 July Meeting) — Wednesday, 19 August (Asia: Thursday AM)
The minutes from July’s contentious meeting — at which three regional Fed presidents dissented in favor of a hike, the first three-way hawkish dissent since September 2016 — are released at 2:00pm ET Wednesday, landing in the Asian session early Thursday. With new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh publicly favoring lower rates, CSFX expects markets to scrutinize the text closely for clues on the committee’s internal balance ahead of the 27–29 August Jackson Hole symposium.
EMPLOYMENT
Australia Labour Force Survey (July) — Thursday, 20 August
The ABS releases its July labour force survey at 11:30am AEST. June’s report showed a surprisingly strong 76,300-person employment gain and a steady 4.4% unemployment rate; a similarly firm July print would complicate the more dovish tone Governor Bullock struck at Tuesday’s press conference and could revive hawkish repricing for AUD/USD.
EARNINGS / CENTRAL BANK
China Loan Prime Rate & Alibaba Earnings — Thursday, 20 August
The People’s Bank of China sets its monthly 1-year and 5-year Loan Prime Rate on Thursday, with markets watching for any signal of further support following Monday’s activity data. The same day brings Alibaba’s fiscal first-quarter earnings, the next major test of Hong Kong tech sentiment after disappointing AI-spend commentary from Tencent and JD.com pressured the Hang Seng last week.
CRYPTO / POLICY
CLARITY Act’s September Runway — Throughout the Week
With the Senate confirmed to remain in recess until 14 September, and prediction markets assigning the bill only a modest chance of becoming law in 2026, CSFX sees no realistic path to a fresh legislative catalyst for XRP or the broader crypto complex this week. Attention instead stays on what the SEC and CFTC can accomplish administratively in the interim.

Section 6 · FAQ
Asian Session — Trader Questions Answered
Key questions from CSFX clients ahead of China’s data dump, the FOMC minutes, and Australia’s jobs report
USD/JPY has already given back half of its intervention-era gains. Does that mean officials failed?
Not necessarily. A confirmed intervention is meant to slow or reverse a disorderly move, not permanently fix the exchange rate at a single level — the underlying rate-differential pressure that weakened the yen through most of 2026 has not disappeared simply because officials stepped in once. What matters for this week is whether the retreat toward 159–161 continues at an orderly pace, in which case CSFX doubts officials feel compelled to act again, or whether it accelerates disorderly toward the pre-intervention highs, which is the scenario most likely to draw a renewed response. Official intervention data confirming the size of last month’s operation isn’t due until 31 August.
Why does Monday’s China data matter so much if the RBA already delivered its decision last week?
Because China, not the RBA’s own calendar, is the more frequent swing factor for AUD/USD in weeks without a fresh RBA meeting. Australia’s economy remains heavily linked to Chinese demand for its commodity exports, so a confirmed slowdown in Chinese retail sales, industrial production, or fixed-asset investment tends to flow through to the Aussie dollar and to copper prices even when the RBA itself is on hold. Monday’s release is also the heaviest single data day of the month for China, making it a bigger swing factor than most weekly Chinese releases.
Kevin Warsh is publicly in favor of lower rates. Why do the FOMC minutes from a meeting under different circumstances still matter?
Because the minutes reflect the internal debate of the committee as a whole, not just the chair’s personal preference, and they cover a meeting — 28–29 July — that produced a rare three-way hawkish dissent from regional Fed presidents. That dissent signals a real split within the FOMC over whether persistent inflation or a softening labor market should take priority, and the minutes are the clearest public record of how seriously other members took that view. With Warsh’s own dovish leanings well known, the market’s real question is how much support that hawkish minority retains within the broader committee, which will shape how much room he has to act ahead of Jackson Hole.
The Hang Seng fell for two straight sessions last week. Is this the start of a bigger pullback?
It’s too early to say with confidence. Last week’s decline was driven largely by disappointing AI-spending commentary from Tencent and JD.com rather than by a broader shift in the macro outlook, and the index remains well within its established 52-week range. CSFX sees Monday’s China data and Thursday’s Alibaba earnings as the two catalysts most likely to clarify whether this is a genuine change in sentiment toward Chinese tech spending or simply a buyable dip within the range — which is why the current trade idea treats a confirmed pullback toward 24,500 as an entry rather than a signal to turn broadly bearish.
What is CSFX’s single highest-conviction trade for the week of 17–21 August?
CSFX’s highest-conviction setup remains accumulating copper on confirmed dips toward $6.30, given how clearly the DRC export ban and record-low LME inventories have overridden softer China demand data in recent weeks. The second-highest-conviction idea is buying AUD/USD dips toward 0.6990, contingent on Thursday’s Australian jobs report confirming the resilience suggested by June’s surprisingly strong employment gain.
CSFX View · Week of 17 August 2026
CSFX View: China’s Data Dump, the FOMC Minutes, and Australia’s Jobs Report Set the Tone as Yen Weakness Resumes
The week of 17–21 August 2026 opens the Asian session with USD/JPY at 159.40, having retraced roughly half of the gains from last month’s confirmed joint US-Japan intervention now that a quiet week for official rhetoric has let speculators lean against the yen again, while AUD/USD at 0.7060 holds firm heading into a data-heavy week that will lean more on China and Australia’s own labour market than on the RBA, whose Tuesday hold is now behind the market. Copper at $6.59/lb continues to consolidate just off last week’s fresh COMEX all-time high, with the structural supply squeeze still fully intact, while the Hang Seng at 25,117 has slipped for two straight sessions after disappointing AI-spend commentary from Tencent and JD.com. In crypto, Litecoin at $44.50 is once again testing its closely watched rising trendline, while XRP at $1.04 continues to defend the psychologically important $1.00 level with the CLARITY Act still shelved until at least 14 September.
Monday’s China data dump should set the tone for AUD/USD, copper, and the Hang Seng before Wednesday’s FOMC minutes and Thursday’s Australian jobs report take over as the week progresses. USD/JPY’s path depends less on any single data point and more on whether a fresh push toward 160–161 draws a renewed official response after last month’s confirmed operation. In commodities, copper’s structural supply squeeze argues for continued dip-buying regardless of near-term China data softness. The Hang Seng’s two-session pullback should find out fairly quickly, via Monday’s data and Thursday’s Alibaba earnings, whether it is the start of something bigger or a buyable dip within a well-established range. In crypto, both XRP and Litecoin are best approached as technical trades this week, with the sector’s next realistic legislative catalyst not arriving before the Senate reconvenes on 14 September.
CSFX’s highest-conviction setups for the week are: accumulating copper on confirmed dips toward $6.30 given the intact supply squeeze, and buying AUD/USD on dips toward 0.6990 contingent on Thursday’s jobs report confirming labour-market resilience. USD/JPY is a fade on rallies toward 161.00 given renewed intervention risk; the Hang Seng is a buy on a confirmed dip toward 24,500 pending confirmation from this week’s catalysts; XRP is a buy on dips to $0.99 while it defends the $1.00 level; and Litecoin remains a patient accumulation play on a confirmed trendline hold above $43. CSFX will issue intra-week alerts if Japanese or US authorities appear to intervene again, if Monday’s China data surprises materially in either direction, if the FOMC minutes reveal a sharper-than-expected internal split, or if Litecoin closes a session decisively below its rising trendline.
