Dollar Slips From an 18-Month High as Yields Retreat, USD/JPY Holds 157.93 and AUD/USD Sinks to 0.6940 After Weak Aussie Jobs
Market Overview
The dollar gives back most of its post-CPI gains on Thursday 15 October. The US dollar index hit 102.86 on Wednesday, its highest since April 2025, then fell about 0.2% to near 102 as Treasury yields dropped and Fed officials played down an October hike. USD/JPY eased 0.23% to 157.93, AUD/USD fell 0.47% to 0.6940 after Australian unemployment rose to 4.7%, USD/CAD slipped 0.13% to 1.4217, USD/CHF lost 0.47% to 0.8310, GBP/JPY added 0.09% to 209.09 and EUR/CHF held 0.9312.
US September CPI rose 0.6% m/m, in line, and 3.7% y/y against 3.6% expected, while core CPI gained 0.3% m/m and 2.6% y/y, above forecasts. Pricing for an October Fed hike jumped from about 22% to as high as 60%, then settled near 42% to 50% after Vice Chair Bowman and San Francisco Fed President Daly said the Fed can wait before the 27 to 28 October meeting; the policy rate is 3.75% to 4.00% after September’s hike. The euro bounced about 0.6% from a 17-month low to near 1.1223 as French debt worries linger, sterling recovered to near 1.3250 from a 13-month low after UK GDP grew 0.1% in August against a forecast fall of 0.1%, and Wall Street’s tech selloff kept the franc and yen supported.
Our positioning is mostly dollar-long on dips. We are bullish USD/JPY from 157.70, USD/CAD from 1.4190 and USD/CHF from 0.8285, and bearish AUD/USD from 0.6995, EUR/CHF from 0.9355 and GBP/JPY from 209.90. US PPI and retail sales at 12:30 GMT are the next test.
Key highlights
- USD/JPY at 157.93 (−0.23%) sits at a triangle apex on the 157.857 and 157.715 averages; 159.454 is the cap, intervention risk builds near 160, and RSI is at 51.71.
- AUD/USD at 0.6940 (−0.47%) trades under a broken rising channel and the 0.69994 fast average after unemployment rose to 4.7%; RSI at 36.07 is near oversold.
- EUR/CHF at 0.9312 rests on the 0.93126 long average after the break of a rising channel; French debt stress supports the franc and RSI is at 39.74.
- GBP/JPY at 209.09 (+0.09%) trades in a falling channel under all three averages; UK GDP beat, but yen intervention risk and RSI at 44.96 keep the bias down.
- USD/CAD at 1.4217 (−0.13%) pulls back toward the 1.41848 fast average after the channel breakout; oil dipped on sanctions-relief reports and RSI is at 59.76.
- USD/CHF at 0.8310 (−0.47%) rests on the 0.82972 fast average and the lower channel line; RSI at 56.41 is under its signal line and the franc stays bid on French stress.
- US PPI and retail sales at 12:30 GMT decide whether the October hike odds rebuild above 50%; a hot print would lift the dollar, while a soft one would favour a squeeze in the AUD/USD and GBP/JPY shorts.
Trade Setups for Today
Six setups for Thursday 15 October 2026, ranked by instrument. Each carries a defined invalidation level: a 1-hour close beyond the stop negates the idea. Setups are valid for today’s session only.
| Instrument | Direction | Entry | Stop | Target 1 | Target 2 | Reward:risk | Conviction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USD/JPY | Long | 157.70 | 157.20 | 158.80 | 159.45 | 2.2 / 3.5 | Medium |
| AUD/USD | Short | 0.6995 | 0.7045 | 0.6905 | 0.6865 | 1.8 / 2.6 | Medium |
| EUR/CHF | Short | 0.9355 | 0.9395 | 0.9295 | 0.9230 | 1.5 / 3.1 | Low |
| GBP/JPY | Short | 209.90 | 210.90 | 207.20 | 205.50 | 2.7 / 4.4 | Medium |
| USD/CAD | Long | 1.4190 | 1.4120 | 1.4295 | 1.4380 | 1.5 / 2.7 | Medium |
| USD/CHF | Long | 0.8285 | 0.8240 | 0.8350 | 0.8390 | 1.4 / 2.3 | Low |
Reward:risk is the distance from entry to target 1 and target 2, divided by the distance from entry to the stop. The USD/JPY, USD/CAD and USD/CHF longs and the AUD/USD short all lean on the same dollar and Treasury yield drivers, so treat them as one dollar book; the EUR/CHF and GBP/JPY shorts depend on risk tone and safe-haven demand for the franc and yen. Levels are conditional technical references, not recommendations.

US PPI and Retail Sales Scenario Analysis
US PPI and retail sales for September are due today, Thursday 15 October at 12:30 GMT. Consensus is +0.6% m/m for headline PPI (5.3% y/y), +0.3% m/m for core PPI and +0.3% m/m for retail sales; an in-line set should leave Fed pricing near 45%. Select a scenario to view the expected path for each pair.
Hot data: headline PPI at or above +0.8% m/m or retail control at or above +0.5%
A hotter set would push October hike odds back above 50%, lift Treasury yields and the dollar, and weigh on equities, which supports the franc and yen against the euro and sterling. The dollar-long ideas reach their targets first.
- USD/JPY158.80, then 159.45
- AUD/USD0.6905, then 0.6865
- EUR/CHF0.9295, then 0.9230
- GBP/JPY207.20, then 205.50
- USD/CAD1.4295, then 1.4380
- USD/CHF0.8350, then 0.8390
Soft data: headline PPI at or below +0.4% m/m and retail control at or below +0.2%
A softer set would reinforce the Fed’s wait-and-see tone, extend the retreat in yields and the dollar, and let risk assets steady. Dollar-long pairs would test their entries and stops, while AUD/USD, EUR/CHF and GBP/JPY would squeeze toward the shorts’ entries and stops.
- USD/JPY157.70, then 157.20
- AUD/USD0.6995, then 0.7045
- EUR/CHF0.9355, then 0.9395
- GBP/JPY209.90, then 210.90
- USD/CAD1.4190, then 1.4120
- USD/CHF0.8285, then 0.8240

USD/JPY Analysis: Price Holds 157.93 at the Apex of a Triangle on the Fast and Mid Averages as Intervention Risk Caps Rallies Near 159
157.93 −0.366 (−0.23%) vs previous close Day range 157.58–158.33
Outlook: Bias is neutral to bullish above the 157.72 mid average, with gains capped by intervention risk near 159 to 160. USD/JPY traded at 157.933 at 06:57 GMT on Thursday 15 October, down 0.23%, after slipping to a one-week low of 157.58 as Treasury yields dropped and Fed officials cooled October hike bets despite the hot CPI. The preferred approach is a pullback long at 157.70 with a stop at 157.20 and targets at 158.80 and 159.45, sized for medium conviction ahead of US PPI and retail sales at 12:30 GMT.

- Support 2
- 157.20
- Support 1
- 157.70
- Resistance 1
- 158.80
- Resistance 2
- 159.45
Daily chart structure
- Price coils at the apex of a triangle between a falling line from the late-July high near 164.7 and a rising line from the early-September low near 153; the pair has not traded above 159.00 since 24 September and has held a 157.50 to 159.00 range since 5 October.
- The fast and mid averages at 157.857 and 157.715 are stacked under price, while the long average at 159.454 caps the topside; today’s low of 157.58 is the line between a pullback and a break of the range.
- RSI reads 51.71, below its signal line at 53.53, a flat reading. Swaps price about 10% odds of a BoJ hike in October and about 88% by December, and reports say officials lean against a back-to-back move; Japan and the US intervened in early August to pull the pair from 163 toward 157, so 159 to 160 is a policy risk zone.
USD/JPY trade setup
Long Medium conviction- Entry
- 157.70
- Stop loss
- 157.20
- Target 1
- 158.80
- Target 2
- 159.45
Risk 50 pips, or 0.32%. Reward:risk 2.2 to target 1, 3.5 to target 2.
Rationale: Entry is a pullback to the 157.70 area, at the 157.715 mid average and just above the 157.58 one-week low. The stop is below that low at 157.20, and the targets are the 158.80 area under the 159.00 range top and the 159.454 long average.
Invalidation: A 1-hour close below 157.20. A soft US PPI or retail sales print at 12:30 GMT, a further drop in Treasury yields, a Japanese intervention move, or a hawkish BoJ signal is the main risk.
AUD/USD | Australian Dollar / US Dollar
AUD/USD Analysis: Price Sinks to 0.6940 Below a Broken Rising Channel After Weak Australian Jobs and a Rejection at 0.7000
0.6940 −0.0033 (−0.47%) vs previous close Day range 0.6938–0.6980
Outlook: Bias is bearish below the 0.7000 fast average, with RSI at 36.07 near oversold. AUD/USD traded at 0.69396 at 06:57 GMT on Thursday 15 October, down 0.47%, after Australia’s September report showed unemployment edging up to 4.7% from 4.6% and employment unexpectedly sliding, which dented bets on another RBA hike after four 25 basis point increases this year. The preferred approach is a rally short at 0.6995 with a stop at 0.7045 and targets at 0.6905 and 0.6865, sized for medium conviction.

- Support 2
- 0.6865
- Support 1
- 0.6905
- Resistance 1
- 0.6995
- Resistance 2
- 0.7045
Daily chart structure
- Price broke the lower line of a rising channel from the June low in mid-September and has fallen from the early-September high near 0.7240; the October low near 0.6905 and the July low near 0.6865 are the supports.
- The fast, mid and long averages at 0.69994, 0.70417 and 0.70832 sit above price in bearish order; AUD/USD briefly poked above 0.7000 on Wednesday before the hot US CPI reversed it, which makes 0.7000 a fresh ceiling.
- RSI reads 36.07, well under 50 and close to the 35 oversold line, so a bounce is possible before the next leg. The dollar index fell back toward 102 from an 18-month high, which limits losses, while soft local jobs data and Fed hike pricing keep the path of least resistance down.

Short Medium conviction- Entry
- 0.6995
- Stop loss
- 0.7045
- Target 1
- 0.6905
- Target 2
- 0.6865
Risk 50 pips, or 0.71%. Reward:risk 1.8 to target 1, 2.6 to target 2.
Rationale: Entry is a rally into the 0.6995 area, at the 0.69994 fast average and the 0.7000 round level that capped Wednesday’s bounce. The stop is above the 0.70417 mid average at 0.7045, and the targets are the 0.6905 October low and the 0.6865 July low.
Invalidation: A 1-hour close above 0.7045. A soft US PPI or retail sales print at 12:30 GMT, a drop in US yields, or a hawkish RBA comment that revives hike bets is the main risk.
EUR/CHF | Euro / Swiss Franc
EUR/CHF Analysis: Price Holds 0.9312 on the Long Average After the Break of a Rising Channel as French Debt Stress Keeps the Franc Bid
0.9312 −0.0002 (−0.02%) vs previous close Day range 0.9294–0.9323
Outlook: Bias is bearish below the 0.9373 fast average, though the pair rests on support. EUR/CHF traded at 0.93123 at 06:57 GMT on Thursday 15 October, flat (−0.02%), on the 0.93126 long average after the sharp 2 October drop that followed French fiscal worries. The preferred approach is a rally short at 0.9355 with a stop at 0.9395 and targets at 0.9295 and 0.9230, sized for low conviction because the SNB can lean against franc strength.
Key levels
- Support 2
- 0.9230
- Support 1
- 0.9295
- Resistance 1
- 0.9355
- Resistance 2
- 0.9395
Daily chart structure
- Price fell out of a rising channel that began in June; the 2 October drop of about 1.7% was the largest single-session fall since 2022 as the French OAT to Bund spread widened past 150 basis points, the widest since 2011, and the franc regained its haven role.
- The fast and mid averages at 0.93731 and 0.93867 sit above price; the long average at 0.93126 is the immediate floor and today’s low is 0.92936, with the early-October wick near 0.9260 below it. Analysts at Rabobank expect the pair to hold close to 0.93.
- RSI reads 39.74, below its signal line at 43.95 and above 30, so there is room to fall. The SNB held at 0% on 24 September while other banks tighten, and it can counter excess franc strength, which is why conviction is low. EUR/USD hit a fresh 17-month low on Wednesday before bouncing toward 1.12.

Short Low conviction- Entry
- 0.9355
- Stop loss
- 0.9395
- Target 1
- 0.9295
- Target 2
- 0.9230
Risk 40 pips, or 0.43%. Reward:risk 1.5 to target 1, 3.1 to target 2.
Rationale: Entry is a rally into the 0.9355 area, under the 0.93731 fast average and above the 0.9330 top of the post-drop range. The stop is above the 0.93867 mid average at 0.9395, and the targets are the 0.9295 area at today’s low and the 0.9230 zone under the early-October wick.
Invalidation: A 1-hour close above 0.9395. A calmer French bond market, SNB commentary against franc strength, or a relief rally in the euro on soft US data at 12:30 GMT is the main risk.
GBP/JPY | British Pound / Japanese Yen
GBP/JPY Analysis: Price Holds 209.09 Inside a Falling Channel Under the Averages as Yen Intervention Risk Meets BoE Hike Bets
209.09 +0.182 (+0.09%) vs previous close Day range 208.59–209.26
Outlook: Bias is bearish below the 211.70 mid average while price stays inside the falling channel. GBP/JPY traded at 209.092 at 06:57 GMT on Thursday 15 October, up 0.09%, after UK GDP grew 0.1% in August against a forecast contraction of 0.1%, while the yen drew support from intervention risk and lower US yields. The preferred approach is a rally short at 209.90 with a stop at 210.90 and targets at 207.20 and 205.50, sized for medium conviction.
Key levels
- Support 2
- 205.50
- Support 1
- 207.20
- Resistance 1
- 209.90
- Resistance 2
- 210.90
Daily chart structure
- Price trades inside a falling channel from the early-September high near 212, after the plunge from the late-August high near 217.5; the upper line near 209.9 is within reach and the lower line near 205 is the channel floor, with the early-October low near 207 in between.
- The fast, mid and long averages at 209.254, 211.700 and 213.583 sit above price; the fast average is only 0.16 above the quote, so a close above it and the 209.9 channel line would be the first sign of a turn.
- RSI reads 44.96, above its signal line at 43.08 but under 50, a weak but steadying reading. Sterling is supported by about 90% odds of a BoE hike on 5 November and the GDP beat, but BoE’s Pill said a hike should not be seen as the start of a series; any yen-positive move on intervention talk hits the cross first.

Short Medium conviction- Entry
- 209.90
- Stop loss
- 210.90
- Target 1
- 207.20
- Target 2
- 205.50
Risk 100 pips, or 0.48%. Reward:risk 2.7 to target 1, 4.4 to target 2.
Rationale: Entry is a rally into the 209.90 area, at the upper falling-channel line and above the 209.254 fast average. The stop is above the recent highs near 210.90 and below the 211.70 mid average, and the targets are the 207.20 area at the October low and the 205.50 zone at the channel floor.
Invalidation: A 1-hour close above 210.90. A risk-on rally after soft US data at 12:30 GMT, a hawkish BoE comment, or a weaker yen with USD/JPY pushing toward 159 is the main risk.
USD/CAD | US Dollar / Canadian Dollar
USD/CAD Analysis: Price Pulls Back to 1.4217 Toward the Fast Average After the Channel Breakout as Oil Dips on Sanctions-Relief Reports
1.4217 −0.0018 (−0.13%) vs previous close Day range 1.4196–1.4239
Outlook: Bias is bullish above the 1.4185 fast average while price holds above the broken channel. USD/CAD traded at 1.42173 at 06:57 GMT on Thursday 15 October, down 0.13%, as the dollar gave back most of its post-CPI gains, while oil eased on reports that Washington is weighing sanctions relief for shadow-fleet tankers, which limits support for the Canadian dollar. The preferred approach is a pullback long at 1.4190 with a stop at 1.4120 and targets at 1.4295 and 1.4380, sized for medium conviction.
Key levels
- Support 2
- 1.4120
- Support 1
- 1.4190
- Resistance 1
- 1.4295
- Resistance 2
- 1.4380
Daily chart structure
- Price broke above a falling channel from the late-June high near 1.4285 in mid-September and has since climbed to a consolidation zone of 1.4150 to 1.4295; the 1 October high near 1.4295 is the ceiling, and the Canadian dollar sits near a 17-month low.
- The fast, mid and long averages at 1.41848, 1.40337 and 1.39969 are stacked below price in bullish order; price tested the fast average on Wednesday and held, so 1.4185 is the line between a normal pullback and a failed breakout.
- RSI reads 59.76, below its signal line at 70.63 but above 50, a cooling reading in an uptrend. Canada’s weak September jobs data, the wide Fed to BoC rate gap and oil near 95 for WTI pull in different directions, while the Fed decision on 28 October at 18:00 GMT is the next large catalyst.
USD/CAD trade setup
Long Medium conviction- Entry
- 1.4190
- Stop loss
- 1.4120
- Target 1
- 1.4295
- Target 2
- 1.4380
Risk 70 pips, or 0.49%. Reward:risk 1.5 to target 1, 2.7 to target 2.
Rationale: Entry is a pullback to the 1.4190 area, at the 1.41848 fast average and the base of the consolidation zone. The stop is below the 1.4150 range floor at 1.4120, and the targets are the 1.4295 area at the 1 October high and the 1.4380 zone of the channel-break extension.
Invalidation: A 1-hour close below 1.4120. A soft US PPI or retail sales print at 12:30 GMT, a drop in Treasury yields, or a jump in oil above 100 that lifts the Canadian dollar is the main risk.
USD/CHF | US Dollar / Swiss Franc
USD/CHF Analysis: Price Rebounds to 0.8310 From the Lower Channel Line and the Fast Average as Fed Hike Bets Ease and the Franc Stays Bid
0.8310 −0.0039 (−0.47%) vs previous close Day range 0.8278–0.8350
Outlook: Bias is bullish above the 0.8297 fast average while the rising channel holds, but momentum is fading. USD/CHF traded at 0.83098 at 06:57 GMT on Thursday 15 October, down 0.47%, after dipping to 0.8278 in Asia on a drop in Treasury yields and a stronger franc, then recovering to the fast average. The preferred approach is a pullback long at 0.8285 with a stop at 0.8240 and targets at 0.8350 and 0.8390, sized for low conviction because RSI is under its signal line.
Key levels
- Support 2
- 0.8240
- Support 1
- 0.8285
- Resistance 1
- 0.8350
- Resistance 2
- 0.8390
Daily chart structure
- Price trades inside a rising channel from the August low near 0.7950; today’s low of 0.8278 touched the lower channel line, and the 1 October high near 0.8385 and the upper line near 0.84 are the topside references.
- The fast, mid and long averages at 0.82972, 0.81799 and 0.81141 sit below price in bullish order; a daily close under the fast average and the 0.8240 area would open the 0.8180 mid average.
- RSI reads 56.41, well under its signal line at 64.66 but above 50, so momentum has cooled. The franc gains on safe-haven flows from French fiscal stress and a 2% Nasdaq drop on Wednesday, while the SNB sits at 0% against a Fed at 3.75% to 4.00%, which supports the pair on dips.
USD/CHF trade setup
Long Low conviction- Entry
- 0.8285
- Stop loss
- 0.8240
- Target 1
- 0.8350
- Target 2
- 0.8390
Risk 45 pips, or 0.54%. Reward:risk 1.4 to target 1, 2.3 to target 2.
Rationale: Entry is a pullback to the 0.8285 area, at the 0.82972 fast average and the lower channel line, just above today’s 0.8278 low. The stop is below that low at 0.8240, and the targets are the 0.8350 area at the recent high and the 0.8390 zone at the 1 October peak.
Invalidation: A 1-hour close below 0.8240. A soft US PPI or retail sales print at 12:30 GMT, a further fall in Treasury yields, or a risk-off move that lifts the franc is the main risk.
Conclusion
US PPI and retail sales at 12:30 GMT set two paths. A hotter set favours USD/JPY at 158.80 then 159.45, USD/CAD at 1.4295 then 1.4380 and USD/CHF at 0.8350 then 0.8390, with AUD/USD sliding to 0.6905 then 0.6865 and the EUR/CHF and GBP/JPY shorts working toward 0.9295 and 207.20. A softer set favours a dollar pullback, with AUD/USD squeezing to 0.6995, GBP/JPY to 209.90 and EUR/CHF to 0.9355. The USD/JPY, AUD/USD, GBP/JPY and USD/CAD ideas carry medium conviction; EUR/CHF and USD/CHF carry low conviction.
Treat every level as conditional and wait for 1-hour closes beyond a stop before judging an idea invalid. Size positions smaller into 12:30 GMT, because four of six setups share the same dollar driver, Fed speakers and the 14:30 GMT EIA report can gap markets, and the yen carries intervention risk near 159 to 160. Our approach is to trade the levels, not the headlines.
