Ifo Surges to 88.8 as the Euro Firms, the Dollar Claws Back Ground After Iran Sanctions, Bund Yields Hold Near 15-Year Highs, and BNB, Ether Extend Their Rally Into Jackson Hole Week

EUR/USD · GBP/JPY · EUR/CHF · Silver · Crude Oil · DAX · EU 10Y · BNB · ETH/USD — live coverage through the European trading session

European markets are trading with a firmer tone on Tuesday as the live session progresses, after Germany’s Ifo Business Climate Index jumped to 88.8 in August from 86.6 in July — a far stronger reading than expected and the sharpest one-month improvement in months — reinforcing bets that the ECB has room to keep tightening into 2027. The Dollar Index has clawed back to near 99.00-99.07, regaining a little poise after Monday’s slide toward three-month lows, as traders parse the follow-through from the sweeping new US sanctions package on Iran that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled Monday under the banner of an “economic D-Day.” EUR/USD has eased modestly to around 1.1670 from Monday’s 1.1682, as the firmer Dollar offsets the Ifo beat for now, while GBP/JPY holds near 217.32, within reach of its 52-week high above 219.70 as yen weakness persists. EUR/CHF is little changed near 0.9365, consolidating inside its 52-week range as UBS continues to flag a 0.91-0.93 base case even as Bank of America argues the Franc’s adjustment phase is nearing completion. Oil has extended Monday’s sell-the-news slide rather than stabilising: Brent is down near $88.85 and WTI has slipped further to near $82.09, as traders weigh whether Monday’s sanctions — which threaten to cut off countries, including China, from the dollar-based financial system unless they sever ties with Tehran — will meaningfully disrupt physical Iranian oil flows, with Oman and Iran set to resume talks on Hormuz shipping later Tuesday. Silver is consolidating near $68.06 an ounce after Gold notched a fresh three-month high above $4,700 overnight before easing back, as investors position ahead of Wednesday’s US core PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole keynote from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. Germany’s 10-year Bund yield is holding right at its 15-year high near 3.26%, with today’s Ifo beat reinforcing rather than easing the hawkish repricing already under way. The DAX is inching higher toward 26,359.35, up around 0.7% on the day and closing in on its record high near 26,573 set earlier this month, even as tech-sector nerves persist ahead of Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings. Crypto remains firm: BNB is trading near $700-715 as BNB Chain’s Pasteur hard fork goes live, while Ethereum holds above the closely watched $2,500 level on continued spot ETF inflows and Bitcoin holding near $79,611. With Wednesday’s PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole address still the week’s clearest scheduled catalysts, today’s session is shaping up as a tug-of-war between the Ifo-driven Euro bid and a Dollar that is trying to stabilise after its own three-month slide.

German Ifo Business Climate Surges to 88.8, Reinforcing Hawkish ECB Bets

Germany’s Ifo Business Climate Index jumped to 88.8 in August from 86.6 in July, comfortably beating expectations and marking one of the sharpest month-on-month improvements of the year, as both the current-conditions and expectations sub-indices strengthened. The beat lands on top of an already-hawkish repricing of ECB policy and is helping the Euro and Bund yields hold firm even as the broader Dollar tries to stabilise, with Tuesday’s release seen as the clearest domestic confirmation yet that the German economy is regaining momentum into the autumn.

Dollar Regains Some Footing as Markets Parse Fallout From Monday’s Iran Sanctions Rollout

The Dollar Index has firmed to near 99.00-99.07, up from Monday’s close around 98.99, as investors digest the scope of the sweeping sanctions package Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled Monday, which threatens to cut off countries maintaining commercial ties with Iran — China included — from the dollar-based financial system. Washington has not yet named which countries could face penalties or specified an implementation timeline, a degree of uncertainty analysts say has limited the immediate market reaction and is helping explain why the greenback’s bounce so far looks more like a pause than a reversal of its three-month downtrend.

Oil Extends Monday’s Slide as Traders Weigh Whether Sanctions Will Actually Disrupt Physical Iranian Supply

Brent crude has slipped further to near $88.85 a barrel and WTI has extended its decline to near $82.09, deepening Monday’s more-than-2% sell-the-news slide, as analysts including CBA note that markets currently view economic pressure as a lower-risk path for physical supply than direct military action. Iran’s rial has slid to a fresh record low against the Dollar on informal markets, and Oman and Iran are set to resume talks Tuesday on managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, including a possible new transit-fee system, keeping the wide $70-$100 range for Brent firmly in play.

Gold Hits a Fresh Three-Month High Before Easing as Silver Consolidates Near $69

Gold pushed to a fresh three-month high above $4,700 an ounce overnight before edging lower as investors booked profit ahead of Wednesday’s US inflation data and Friday’s Jackson Hole address, while Silver is consolidating near $68.06 an ounce, holding the bulk of its recent advance to a decade-plus high. The white metal continues to lag gold’s safe-haven bid on a day-to-day basis, reflecting its heavier industrial-demand component, but remains up close to 20% over the past month on the same soft-Dollar, debasement-trade backdrop lifting bullion broadly.

DAX Inches Toward Record Highs as Ifo Beat Offsets Nerves Ahead of Nvidia Earnings

The DAX is trading around 26,359.35, up roughly 0.7% on the day and closing in again on its record high near 26,573 set earlier this month, as today’s strong Ifo survey offsets lingering nervousness in the technology sector ahead of Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings report. Volkswagen remains under pressure after CEO Oliver Blume flagged further cost-cutting and possible workforce reductions on Monday, a reminder that today’s index-level firmness is not uniform across sectors even as the broader German equity backdrop improves.

BNB and Ethereum Extend Gains as BNB Chain’s Pasteur Hard Fork Goes Live

BNB is trading near $700-715, holding most of last week’s advance as BNB Chain’s Pasteur hard fork went live in the early hours of Tuesday, part of a 2026 roadmap upgrade to transaction speed, finality and scalability that briefly paused deposits and withdrawals on major exchanges. Ethereum continues to hold above the closely watched $2,500 level, supported by continued spot ETF inflows and Bitcoin’s own move to near $79,611, with both tokens tracking the same institutional-demand backdrop that has underpinned the broader crypto complex through August.

Fundamental Backdrop

EUR/USD is trading near 1.1670, comfortably within its 52-week range of roughly 1.1325-1.2079, easing modestly from Monday’s 1.1682 as a firmer Dollar Index near 99.00-99.07 offsets today’s strong German Ifo Business Climate print, which jumped to 88.8 from 86.6 and reinforces the case for further ECB tightening. With the Dollar’s bounce looking more like a pause than a reversal of its three-month downtrend, the pair’s near-term path likely hinges on Wednesday’s US core PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole keynote from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal remains constructive, with the pair holding well above its 50-day average after last week’s push toward the 1.17 handle. A confirmed break above 1.1710 would expose the 1.1800 zone and put the 52-week high near 1.2079 back in play, while a slip below the 1.1580 pivot risks a deeper pullback toward 1.1500, with Wednesday’s PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole address the clearest sources of two-way risk into the weekend.

Session trend · GBP/JPY
Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

GBP/JPY is trading near 217.32, within its 52-week range of 197.46 to 219.70 and holding a tight session range between roughly 217.10 and 217.45, as persistent Yen weakness continues to make the cross a preferred vehicle for carry positioning while the Bank of Japan stays on the sidelines relative to its G10 peers. Sterling itself is little changed on the day, so today’s firmness is being driven almost entirely by the Yen leg, with broader risk appetite — still constructive given firm equities and crypto — providing an additional tailwind for the pair.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal leans firmly bullish, with the pair holding well above its 50-day and 100-day moving averages after a steady summer grind higher. A confirmed break above 217.50 would expose the 52-week high near 219.70, while a slip below the 215.50 pivot risks a pullback toward 213.80, with any shift in the risk-on backdrop into Jackson Hole the clearest source of two-way risk.

EUR/CHF

Stop Loss0.9250

Session trend · EUR/CHF
Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

EUR/CHF is trading near 0.9365, within its 52-week range of 0.8975 to 0.9420 and little changed on the day, as today’s stronger-than-expected German Ifo survey lends modest support to the Euro leg even as UBS continues to see the pair holding a 0.91-0.93 base-case range over the coming months. Bank of America has separately argued that the Franc’s own adjustment phase is nearing completion, a view that, if it plays out, would argue for a more two-way market in the cross rather than a one-directional Franc-strength trade.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal is closer to neutral than the other pairs in today’s report, with the cross range-bound just below the upper end of its 52-week band. A confirmed break above 0.9420 would put fresh multi-year highs in view, while a slip below the 0.9300 pivot risks a retracement toward 0.9250, with this week’s Ifo follow-through and Swiss National Bank commentary the clearest sources of two-way risk.

Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

Silver is trading near $68.06 an ounce, consolidating after Gold pushed to a fresh three-month high above $4,700 overnight before easing back as investors booked profit ahead of Wednesday’s PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole address. The white metal continues to lag Gold’s day-to-day safe-haven bid given its heavier industrial-demand component, but remains up close to 20% over the past month on the same soft-Dollar, debasement-trade dynamics, with structural demand from solar and grid electrification still providing a firm floor.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal remains constructive, with the metal holding comfortably above its 50-day and 100-day moving averages after last week’s push above $69. A confirmed break above $70.00 would expose the $74.00 zone and put a retest of the year’s highs back in play, while a slip below the $66.00 pivot risks a deeper pullback toward $63.50, with a sharp Dollar rebound the clearest source of two-way risk.

Crude Oil (WTI)

Energy · ~$82.09 — Extending Monday’s Sharp Sell-the-News Pullback
$82.09
▼ Softer still, extending Monday’s decline as traders weigh the sanctions’ actual supply impact

Take Profit$90.00
TradingView chart
Session trend · Crude Oil (WTI)
Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

WTI crude is trading near $82.09, extending Monday’s more-than-2% sell-the-news slide that followed the formal rollout of Washington’s Iran sanctions package. Analysts including CBA note markets currently view economic pressure as a lower-risk path for physical crude supply than direct military escalation, which explains why the decline has continued rather than reversed, while Oman and Iran resuming talks Tuesday on Strait of Hormuz shipping is the clearest near-term swing factor for whether today’s slide extends further or finds a floor.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal stays constructive on a medium-term view, with the wide $70-$100 range CBA and others flag for the second half of the year still intact. A confirmed break above $86.00 would expose the $90.00 zone and put a retest of last week’s highs back in play, while a slip below the $80.00 pivot risks a deeper pullback toward $77.00, with the outcome of Oman-Iran talks and any further sanctions detail the clearest sources of two-way risk.

DAX

26,359.35
▲ Firmer, up roughly 0.7% and closing in on this month’s record near 26,573

Stop Loss25,500

Session trend · DAX
Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

The DAX is trading near 26,359.35, up around 0.7% on the day and closing back in on its record high near 26,573 set earlier this month, as today’s stronger-than-expected Ifo survey offsets lingering nervousness in the technology sector ahead of Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings. Volkswagen remains a notable laggard after CEO Oliver Blume warned Monday that mounting pressure on the automotive sector will require further cost-cutting, including significant workforce reductions, a reminder that today’s index-level strength is uneven beneath the surface.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal leans constructive, with the index holding above its 50-day average after last week’s brief pullback tied to global bond-market volatility. A confirmed break above 26,400 would put the record high near 26,573 back in play, while a slip below the 25,800 pivot risks a retest of 25,500, with Nvidia’s Wednesday results and Friday’s Jackson Hole address the clearest sources of two-way risk into the weekend.

Session trend · EU 10Y Yield
Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

Germany’s 10-year Bund yield is holding near 3.26%, right at its highest level since March 2011, as today’s stronger-than-expected Ifo survey reinforces rather than eases the hawkish ECB repricing already under way. Money markets are now pricing a roughly 25% chance of the deposit rate reaching 3% by March 2027 and 60% by September 2027, with structural fiscal-sustainability concerns across Germany, France, the UK, Japan and the US keeping a broader floor under long-end yields globally.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal leans toward higher yields, with the market holding comfortably above its 50-day average after a steady summer climb. A confirmed break above 3.30% would expose the 3.45% zone, while a pullback in yield below the 3.15% pivot risks a deeper retracement toward 3.05%, with Wednesday’s US PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole address the clearest sources of two-way risk given their read-through for global long-end yields.

Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

BNB is trading near $708, holding most of its recent gains as BNB Chain’s Pasteur hard fork went live in the early hours of Tuesday, part of a broader 2026 roadmap upgrade to transaction speed, finality, scalability and support for AI agents and real-world assets that briefly paused deposits and withdrawals on major exchanges including Binance and MEXC. The token continues to benefit from the same institutional-demand backdrop lifting the broader crypto complex, even as it has underperformed Bitcoin and Ether on a trailing-week basis.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal leans constructive, with the token holding above its 50-day average after a firm August. A confirmed break above $730 would expose the $780 zone and put a run at higher long-term targets back in view, while a pullback below the $660 pivot risks a retracement toward $620, with the smoothness of today’s network upgrade and Bitcoin’s own trajectory near $79,611 the clearest sources of two-way risk.

Chart by TradingView

Fundamental Backdrop

Ethereum is trading near $2,500, holding the key level after a strong recovery rally that took the token from the $1,800-$1,900 area back above $2,500 over the past week, supported by renewed institutional interest and continued inflows into US spot Ethereum ETFs, including BlackRock’s staked ether product. The token continues to track Bitcoin’s own climb to near $79,611, with both benefiting from the same broader risk-on, ETF-driven backdrop even as today’s session is comparatively quiet for Ether specifically.

Technical Outlook

The daily signal leans constructive, with the token holding above its 50-day average after climbing steadily through August. A confirmed break above $2,550 would expose the $2,750 zone and put a run at higher long-term targets back in view, while a pullback below the $2,350 pivot risks a retracement toward $2,200, with Bitcoin’s own trajectory near $79,611 and this week’s PCE and Jackson Hole events the clearest sources of two-way risk.

Section 4 · FAQ

European Session FAQ

Answers to the questions traders are asking about today’s session

Why did the German Ifo survey jump so sharply in August?
The Ifo Business Climate Index rose to 88.8 in August from 86.6 in July, with both the current-conditions and expectations components improving as German firms reported more favourable trading conditions and a somewhat brighter six-month outlook. The scale of the jump surprised many economists, and while a single month’s data should be treated cautiously, it lands on top of Friday’s stronger-than-expected flash Eurozone PMIs, reinforcing a picture of a German economy that is regaining some momentum after a fragile first half of the year.
Why is oil still falling today after Monday’s steep sell-the-news drop on Iran sanctions?
Monday’s roughly 2.5% decline in Brent and WTI reflected classic sell-the-news positioning, since markets had already priced in a substantial degree of supply risk ahead of the actual announcement, and Tuesday’s continued slide reflects genuine uncertainty over whether Washington’s sanctions will meaningfully disrupt physical Iranian oil flows or mainly restrict financial and trade relationships. Analysts note that markets currently see economic pressure as a lower-risk path for physical supply than direct military action, which is why today’s move has been a further grind lower rather than a sharp reversal in either direction.
Why is the Dollar regaining strength even though it’s still near a three-month low?
The Dollar Index’s move to near 99.00-99.07 from Monday’s close around 98.99 reflects markets digesting the specifics — or lack thereof — of Monday’s Iran sanctions package, since Washington has not yet named which countries could face penalties or specified an implementation timeline. That uncertainty has produced a modest, stabilising bounce rather than a trend reversal, and the Dollar remains well within its broader three-month downtrend heading into Wednesday’s PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole keynote from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.
Why are German Bund yields staying elevated even as today’s growth data improves?
Stronger growth data and elevated bond yields are reinforcing rather than offsetting each other in today’s session: a healthier German economy supports the case for the ECB to keep tightening, which itself is a key driver of the hawkish repricing that has pushed Bund yields to a 15-year high. Structural fiscal-sustainability concerns across several major economies, not just Germany, are compounding that dynamic, which is why today’s Ifo beat has coincided with yields holding firm rather than easing back.
What’s driving BNB and Ethereum higher today?
BNB’s session is being shaped by BNB Chain’s Pasteur hard fork, a scheduled network upgrade that briefly paused deposits and withdrawals on major exchanges as part of a broader 2026 roadmap to improve transaction speed and scalability, while Ethereum’s strength continues to reflect renewed institutional demand and steady inflows into US spot Ethereum ETFs. Both tokens are also benefiting from Bitcoin’s own move to near $79,611, part of a broader risk-on backdrop across crypto markets that has persisted through much of August.
What should traders watch for the rest of the European session and into the week ahead?
The most immediate swing factors are the outcome of Tuesday’s Oman-Iran talks on Strait of Hormuz shipping and any further detail on which countries face penalties under Monday’s US sanctions package, both of which could move oil and the Dollar sharply in either direction. Beyond that, Wednesday’s US core PCE print and Nvidia earnings, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Friday Jackson Hole keynote, remain the week’s clearest scheduled catalysts for the Dollar, European yields and broader risk appetite, alongside the ongoing question of whether BNB and Ethereum can extend their recent gains through a Fed-dominated back half of the week.

European Session Summary — Tuesday, 25 August 2026 (Live Update)

Tuesday’s European session has opened on a firmer footing, with Germany’s Ifo Business Climate Index jumping to 88.8 from 86.6 in July, reinforcing bets that the ECB has room to keep tightening even as the Dollar Index has clawed back to near 99.00-99.07, regaining a little poise after Monday’s slide toward three-month lows. EUR/USD has eased modestly to around 1.1670 from Monday’s 1.1682 as the firmer Dollar offsets the Ifo beat for now, GBP/JPY is holding near 217.32 within reach of its 52-week high above 219.70 as persistent Yen weakness keeps the cross well supported, and EUR/CHF is little changed near 0.9365, consolidating just below the top of its 52-week range. The session’s dominant cross-asset story remains the aftermath of Monday’s US sanctions rollout on Iran: Brent crude has slipped further to near $88.85 a barrel and WTI has extended its decline to near $82.09, deepening Monday’s more-than-2% sell-the-news slide, as traders await the outcome of Tuesday’s Oman-Iran talks on Strait of Hormuz shipping. Precious metals remain firm: Silver is consolidating near $68.06 an ounce after Gold set a fresh three-month high above $4,700 overnight before easing back. Germany’s 10-year Bund yield is holding right at its 15-year high near 3.26%, with today’s Ifo beat reinforcing rather than easing the hawkish repricing already under way. The DAX has opened firmer near 26,359.35, up roughly 0.7% and closing back in on its record high near 26,573, as the Ifo beat offsets lingering nervousness ahead of Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings. Crypto remains firm: BNB is holding near $708 as BNB Chain’s Pasteur hard fork goes live, while Ethereum holds above the closely watched $2,500 level on continued spot ETF inflows and Bitcoin holding near $79,611. Highest-conviction session idea: favour precious metals, EUR/USD dips and crypto exposure while the Dollar’s bounce looks more corrective than trend-reversing, but size crude oil and DAX positions cautiously around the Oman-Iran talks and Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings, and treat Wednesday’s PCE print and Friday’s Jackson Hole keynote as the week’s genuine sources of two-way risk.

For the individual instruments: EUR/USD buy dips toward 1.1580, stop 1.1500, target 1.1780 — today’s Ifo beat and the broader Dollar downtrend are genuine tailwinds, though Wednesday’s PCE print is a real source of two-way risk. GBP/JPY buy dips toward 215.50, stop 213.80, target 219.50 — persistent Yen weakness and a constructive risk backdrop are genuine tailwinds, though any shift into Jackson Hole is a real source of two-way risk. EUR/CHF buy dips toward 0.9300, stop 0.9250, target 0.9420 — today’s Ifo beat is a modest tailwind, though UBS’s 0.91-0.93 range view is a real source of two-way risk. Silver buy dips toward $66.00, stop $63.00, target $74.00 — a soft Dollar and firm industrial demand are genuine tailwinds, though a sharp Dollar rebound is a real source of two-way risk. Crude Oil buy dips toward $80.00, stop $77.00, target $90.00 — unresolved Hormuz risk is a genuine tailwind, though the outcome of today’s Oman-Iran talks is a real source of two-way risk. DAX buy dips toward 25,800, stop 25,500, target 26,600 — today’s Ifo beat is a genuine tailwind, though Nvidia’s Wednesday earnings are a real source of two-way risk for tech-sensitive sentiment. EU 10Y buy dips in yield toward 3.15%, stop 3.05%, target 3.45% — fiscal-sustainability concerns and today’s Ifo beat are genuine tailwinds, though a dovish PCE surprise is a real source of two-way risk. BNB buy dips toward $660, stop $620, target $780 — institutional demand and today’s network upgrade are genuine tailwinds, though any upgrade-related disruption is a real source of two-way risk. ETH/USD buy dips toward $2,350, stop $2,200, target $2,750 — Bitcoin’s own advance to near $79,611 is a genuine tailwind, though profit-taking after a strong rally is a real source of two-way risk.
